    Re: Anxiety and Atkins

Hi Lisa, I suffer from a really bad panic disorder and am on medication which controls it very nicely but i have found that since being on the Atkins plan that i do feel a lot better. I used to get panic attacks out of the blue for not apparant reason which is very scarey.Sometimes i would wake in the middle of the night in the middle of an attack. There were times that i would have four or five attacks a day which was very debilitating. There was a stage that i couldnt leave the house , take care of my children or even be on my own!and ended up admitting myself to hospital in desperation . since being on medication i can now do anything -- including flying interstate on my own to attend miniatures fairs where i sell some of my craft work .I first started to experience these when i was 14 and wasnt diagnosed and treated until i was 28.I feel as though I have been given my life back ! I cut out caffeine about 18 years ago as I found that made me feel worse. The panic disorder is basically caused by the adrenalin producing centre in your brain being too sensitive. Instread of "kicking in "in an emergency situation it would just go off for no reason at all . Has your doctor taught you how you can stop a panic attack in its tracks Lisa??? I found this info to be invaluable as it meant I was now in control over what was happening to my body. Let me know if you would like me to explain it to you .. its very easy and very effective.

    Cheers

My dr had me put a rubber band in my wrist and when I would feel one coming on I was to snap my wrist, funny but it sure helped when I got scared riding in a car.

Haha -- yes i have heard about people using rubber bands .. It distracts you so you dont hyperventilate and stops all those nasty symptoms. I used to carry a pack of TicTacs in my bag and would go for one if i felt one coming on ( hubby used to call them my panic pills!) Just serves as a distaction. I have other ways of dealing with it now that are much more effective.
