Hi, folks. I am so enjoying this site! Between this and sugarfreesheila.com I have plenty of info and motivation. Here is my question, which I ask with trepidation. I know we are not supposed to go more than 6 hours without eating and all that. I have DANDR and refer to it often. However, I have a slightly different issue with fasting. See, hubby and I do this as a regular spiritual discipline; usually one day every week or two, and not as a dietary practice. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this work with the low-carb lifestyle? This morning I drank a low carb protein shake (total 5 grams) and had a small glass of celery/cuke juice in the afternoon. Tonight I just have my 2 cups salad for dinner along with bunless dog and I'm good to go. What does anyone have as far as advice for this strange situation?

Re: Tricky question for the brave
What are the rules of your fast ? Is it like Ramadan ? Meaning no eating while the sun is up sort of thing ? If so, then I guess a big breakfast in the morning and a big meal in the evening might work.Male

Re: Tricky question for the brave
Atkins is a high fat diet. So it would be best if you could somehow get some added fat into your fasting menu. For example, a vegetable juices aren't good--they have no fiber. Fiber delays the blood sugar impact of the natural sugars in vegetables. Fat would do the same thing too.
The protein shake---again, how much fat is in that protein shake? If your fast only allows liquids or semi-solids to be consumed during the day, you might want to look into something like an eggnog instead of a protein shake. The egg in the eggnog has nearly the 65-30-5 fat-protein-carb ratio recommended for Induction. Plus alittle more fat if you use a little heavy cream in the egg nog. Same thing for your mid-day drink--try to have something that has that combination of fats/proteins/carbs.~Megs~

I frequently add flaxseed oil to my protein shakes to up the fat content...and it's VERY good source of Omega oils.~Joy

Re: Tricky question for the brave
Thanks a bunch, you guys! Usually we go one day a week from dinner until dinner, no solid food, just liquids. I will definitely add some fat to my drinks throughout the day, though. Don't know why I didn't think of it before. Guess I was just focusing so much on making sure my liquids didn't put me over my carb count. I am actually having some herb tea with stevia and cream right now.

Re: Tricky question for the brave
War, once you get to dairy rung, the Whey Protein powders become a 'legal' food. I use them as a basis for a smoothie. I also add berries (on the berry rung) and sometimes I'll add flaxseed meal or flaxseed oil for fat. They are far too high in protein to be used alone in the diet.
If you have problems with the cephalic insulin response, they could trigger cravings. Yet, there is something about the high protein and high fat that makes me full for HOURS after drinking one. I don't have them on a daily or even weekly basis.
I also use the whey protein instead of flour for some recipes. Crepes, pancakes, etc.~Joy
