  • If I could swear right now, I would !!

Im so annoyed and frankly quite hurt. I've only recently recieved my copy of the Dr Atkins Revolution book, whilst promising myself that I will only properly start once my book had arrived. Well anyways, my mum knows how much of an issue I have with my weight. Its like now she wont help me, as she feels the foods that I will be needing are too expensive :@ I really dont wanna have to give up the idea of going on the atkins diet, it just now seems like a pipe-idea, as if it will never happen.

Would it be possible to just follow a specific diet plan, as opposed to the variety of menus given in the induction. The sample diet on page 133, could I just follow that for 2 weeks and still lose weight?

I'd really appreciate anyones response on the direction I should be taking on this? thanks in advance.

Hi Danny ( i probably would have sworn ) The foods on Atkins are not really any more expensive than what you would normally be having. I will admit some of the meats and steaks can be quite costly - but you could get some ground beef and make your own hamburgers ( yummy with cheese on top) tinned Tuna and fish is not too expensive ,I can often get roast chickens from the deli later in the day they even tend to reduce the prices just to get rid of them.i often get cheese from the deli that they lower the prices on when they get closer to their sell by dates. Have a good think and be a little creative and I am sure you will be able to find things that wont blow your mums budget!

    Good Luck!

I would adivise in this circumstance, that if high carb foods are cooked, just dont eat them. I also know thats easier said than done. Eat your meat and veggies only for the first 2 weeks, maybe if she sees someThe weight come off in 2 weeks she will come around to your way of thinking.
      Good luck hun!!

Is it at all possible for you to contribute to the food budget? You look very young so I am not sure if you are even legally able to work. I know when living with my parents and wanting to go on a diet plan the real issue for my mother would have been the extra cooking! Cereal and milk requires no effort while cooking low carb(in my opnion!) requires more time in the kitchen. If you are not able to cook basic things perhaps ask your mother for some lessons. Be responsible for your own "diet foods". Buy in season veggies, canned veggies while not the best are a lot of times very cheap. Be patient with your mom. A lot of people assume that Atkins means a dozen eggs per day, half a pound of bacon, three huge cheese burgers, and a pound of steak every night for dinner! That would sound expensive to me too. It can be done in a much more economical way. Sure I spend more on meats, cheese, cream, and butter but I spend LESS on packaged anf processed junk. I also do not buy cola anymore. The budget has remained more or less the same.

Danny - there is no need to use the menus given in the book, especially those that advise you to use any of the Atkins products.
Just follow the Rules of induction and pick foods from the allowed list (page 122 -129 in my book) and you will be fine.

As to eating the sample given for 14 days in succession I think I would soon get bored with the same dishes each day, but if you use that as a guide for amounts but vary the veggies and meat etc according to the allowed foods list.

In fact I bet I am SAVING money by eating Atkins-style, as I am not wasting money on carby snacks and soft drinks!

So maybe have chicken breast one day, fish another, ground beef patties another day, chicken thighs or drumsticks another day, and sometimes have salads and sometimes cooked veggies to vary it and make it more interesting.

To be honest you dont have to spend much more money on the foods - eggs are cheap and versatile - omelettes, fried, quiches, hardboiled all taste good and have plenty of nutrients.

As for eating expensive steak every day - in over three years on Atkins I probably have eaten steak maybe once in a blue moon! I tend to buy the cheaper cuts of meats (the ones with more fat on them) and cheaper packs of chicken legs or whole chickens rather than just skinless breast meat.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Yes indeed what Elizellen says, the recipes given in the book sure make use of some expensive stuff, but there really is no need to do that, you can go ahead and make up your own menus, you can also look in the stickies right here, for a compact list of the foods allowed on induction and start juggling with that http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=6781
A very good website with lots of recipes is this one of Linda :http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/recipes.html, the recipes with a asterix are the ones that you can eat on induction.
            Good luck Danny !!!!

Your Mom may be suprised that the costs even out over time. My appetite isn't what it used to be, plus I'm smaller, and I'm eating less as a result.
And some of the pre-packaged carbage isn't exactly cheap!
