  • Totally GROSSED OUT!

I always buy a couple of 1 liter bottles on my way to work in the morning. This day was no exception, but it was exceptional in that I stopped off at a new convience store that I do not normally go to and I didn't squeeze the bottles first before buying them. The water inside the bottles was nearly frozen. I didn't think anything of it.

I got to work and started drinking my first bottle. I noticed upon openning it, that the bottle itself was "squishy" rather than firm, but the cap had not been tampered with, so I thought it was safe. I started drinking it anyway. I drank about 3 quarters of it when I looked inside and saw stuff floating around in it. At first, I thought it was just bits of ice, but then I looked closer and noticed that the inside plastic liner of the bottle had been disintegrating. I have not sent the water to a lab or anything, but I have good reason to believe that the floating stuff was plastic! And I had been drinking it all along! (Anyone know how many carbs there are in plastic)?

I called the manufacturer, and they wanted me to send the bottle and water back to them right away. While I am in favor of helping the company recall the defective water, if I sent the bottle back, and DIED, what recourse would my family have? So, at lunch time, I went back to the same store and looked for another bottle to send back to the company. I found an even worse bottle! I will try to post pictures of these later, so you can get grossed out too.

BTW. Does anyone know what I should expect healthwise given that I drank plastic today?

Here's a follow up that I meant to post with the above. This is what I have learned from my experience:

    (1) if the bottle is squishy (you can squeeze it) before you have openned it, then the plastic has been compromised; and

    (2) freezing is very hard on the plastic containers and will compromise same.

          Re: Totally GROSSED OUT!

I think you'll be fine too. Let us know what the company say on receipt of the bottle.

Your story reminded me of a can of... well, it was something sweet, can't remember what... that I once opened. I raised it to my lips meaning to take a swig and by sheer luck noticed something bobbing inside...
I took the whole lid off the can and found that there was a ball of,,,something... all covered in mold, floating in the liquid! It was the size of a golfball. Don't know if it was just a putrid mass or a decayed mouse or something. It was too far gone to tell. Too gross.
Boy am I glad I didn't drink that, but it was a close shave!
I was a kid at the time and just chucked out the can and didn't complain to anyone. Had that been today, I'd have certainly made myself heard.

I took a swig of beer that someone had just spit chewing tobacco into once. That was disgusting to say the least.

                Re: Totally GROSSED OUT!

Sometimes a can or bottle is coated with avery fine wax of some sort. Don't know why, some just are. Maybe all of them are. But I've heard that some times if the can or borrle is old or has gotten to hot and then brought back to room temp ar colder at a quick rate, that's the wax hardening again and that's where these little flakes come from.
