  • Which Atkins Book is right?

I want to buy Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution. I went on eBay to search for this book, and it shows different versions.

    Example:

Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution - Hardcover Published 1999
Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution - Softcover Published 1997
Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution - Softcover Published 2001
Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution - Softcover Published 2002

Which one is the right one to get?

    Thanks for the help!

Yes... the 2002 edition. That's the one this board goes by as it was the last one that Dr A wrote entirely, therefore has had no other "pens" messing around with it.

I was going to ask this exact question. In some places there are references to the Atkins for Life book, which is filled with product pushing. I bought it when I first began in 2003 and promptly set it on the shelf until a few nights ago.

I recently got a "2002" version book that I'm pretty sure wasn't penned only by Dr. Atkins. I bought mine on Half.com. It claims to be copywritten and published in 2002, but it's replete with suggestions for "carb controlled snacks", which, if I understand correctly isn't supposed to be allowed if you're doing 2002 by the book. It flat out says that a serving or two of bars and shakes during induction is ok. Maybe it depends on where you get the book? Who knows.

Rather than be completely confused, I just took a look at all the lists I've seen posted around the internet of acceptable foods, eliminated any that are not whole foods (ones the Lord made ) and kept it moving.

I don't think some of the prople that already have the book know that the 2002 version that's currently selling isn't the same as what they have. Or this IS the real 2002 version everyone is following here - in which case I'm not eating a rack of stuff I could eat. Which I'm sure won't kill me.

I have the 2002 version, and I know it is the correct one because I bought it in 2002. And, yes, it has sample induction menus that includes shakes. It has another contradiction, as well in it.

Beginning on page 232, it gives a "One Week Induction Menu". Day one lists a controlled carb strawberry shake as a snack. The breakfast for Friday lists cottage cheese, but earlier in the book he states that you can't have cottage cheese during induction. That same breakfast includes two Bran-a-Crisp crackers, which he also says are a no-no earlier in the book. Sunday's snack is a controlled carb vanilla shake.

I look at it this way... I am not going to "throw the baby out with the bathwater", meaning, I am following the rules and the acceptable foods lists. I totally blow off the sample menus, because that is where the dicrepancies occur. I eat whole, unprocessed foods which means I avoid shakes and bars.

Believe me, I am rather "anal" by nature and if I thought about it long enough, these discrepancies would drive me nuts. I have had great success with Atkins my first time around and this time around, so I just roll with it.

Since it is the only program to have ever taken an ounce off of me, the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution is the only low-carb book of which I am a proponent. I'm biased, but that one would be my suggestion!

Yes, Sheila - but it's been re-published several times. Same name, different versions. That's why people are confused.

The good news is that all versions of Atkin's original book do work (for most people). Even the one that stresses the suppliments and shakes--just ignore that part and stick to everything else. I still use the book from the 1970's.
