  • peanuts/peanut butter

I just recently started the nuts & seeds rung and found that I nearly lost my mind after a serving of "natural peanut butter" which upon closer investigation revealed sugar in its ingredients. I ended up at the drug store in the middle of the work day buying a jar of peanuts and I ate about 1/4 of the jar (16 oz jar!!!) before I finally gave the whole jar away in order to stop myself. Obvioulsy I can't have any of that again. Has that happened to anyone else? Are there products out there that people have found they tolerate better? I was SOOOO excited to eat PB again

    Re: peanuts/peanut butter

I used to have that problem, but luckily through trial and error, I found stuff that works for me.

What natural peanut butter did you buy?

I've only found ONE brand of peanut butter that won't give me cravings. I buy Adam's Natural Peanut Butter. If you look at the ingredients, the only thing in it is, well...peanuts. I prefer the chunky stuff, but the creamy is great too. It's a bit of a pain to have to stir it all together when you first open it, but it's great, great stuff. They do have a non-stir formula, but I believe that has added sugars or something to help stabilize it.

ooooh...Adam's is (was) my favorite (had to stop to go through the process of which nut I'm allergic to), along with getting it fresh from the Natural food stores where you can grind it your own; just check the nutrition list on the machines before you start grinding away.

Cashews give me terrible cravings! I can't have them at all. Didn't realize they weren't really legal, either. Now I eat almonds. Didn't think I liked them until I started this WOE. Weird, huh?

That's why nuts aren't allowed during induction! It has nothing to do with their carb content, but all about the cravings and portion control.

I use Skippy Natural which doesn't have the nasty oil on top, but it does list sugar in its ingrdients. Prior to that though I used the Skippy low carb PB. Seemed to not be a problem with me.

Cashews will do me in. I have to portion out 1 oz. in a snack bag to not over indulge.

I use Adams also. Found it at the market when I was on that wrung. Good stuff. I also grab a handful of cashews, as a snack. But only a handful. It doesn't promote cravings with me; it's more psychological.

Years ago, I did a low fat/hard exercise diet. I lost a lot of weight (although I got burned out from the exercise routine) but I would start saying "I can have a handful of these...". A few days later, I would say," that didn't put any weight on me, so I can eat more...".
After then putting on 30 pounds, I realized I shouldn't think that way anymore .
So now, after a handful. I make sure it's only 1 handful!

I am really really good with unsalted nuts. I choose walnuts for their healthful benefits and find that a serving of those fills me up and doesn't cause me to crave for more.

Peanut butter and salted peanuts though - OMG - one taste of those and I could go on a rampage! I have both in the pantry now but am avoiding them for several more weeks and then I'll give them another try, right now I am like you and can't stop myself if I start eating them.

                  Re: peanuts/peanut butter

For some reason I can eat a serving of peanuts and be fine--I actually don't like peanuts that much and would pick any other nut over them. But peanut BUTTER on the other hand...that's dangerous stuff if it's the wrong brand.

Cashews give me HUGEEEEEEEEEE cravings. And it doesn't matter how many I eat. Just eating 1 cashew gave me cravings!

You can try starting slow with a heathier nut such as Almonds and then build up to peanut butter. Don't eat more than a handful of nuts to start.

                      Re: peanuts/peanut butter

I'm a raving, ravenous BEAST when I have peanuts. Or, any roasted/salted nut for that matter.

Raw nuts, on the otherhand, OTHER than peanuts, are ok for me. Raw almonds, almond flour, raw coconut, raw walnuts, raw pecans and raw brazil nuts...I can handle all of them.

Peanuts and I don't get along. I love them though...and if given a jar or peanuts or peanut butter I will sit right there and eat every bit of it in one sitting...and then hit the pantry and eat whatever I can get my hands on.

Cashews are much higher in carbs than the other nuts. That's why they are limited to 1/2 ounce during OWL.

As for peanut butter, I like Crazy Richard Brand and the Safeway Organics brand.

                          Re: peanuts/peanut butter

Peanuts are a bad food for me. I find it hard to stop the spoon from going back into the jar. I only buy natural peanut butter, as it helps that a bit. With the pure peanut butter (no sugar or other ingredients at all) I still have trouble stopping the spoon from going in, but I don't THINK about the peanut butter in the fridge all day long like I used to with the additive filled peanut butter.

I'm an Adam's fan too..I do prefer the salted one, but buy the unsalted as i tend to have a bit more control. I could swim in a pool full of peanutbutter...YUM!

I've actually found I prefer the texture of natural peanut butter now to the one that doesn't separate..it's too smooth for me.

and the stabilizer that stops non-natural from separating is hydrogenated oil, which is a trans fat (though i don't think it's in huge amounts).

As for nuts i have very little control as well...i do buy plain walnuts and try to have a handful a day as they have alot of health benefits.

I'm not crazy about peanuts, esp peanut butter, but if I eat peanuts I can't stop myself! How's that for weird? I love raw almonds. They taste so sweet to me now.
