  • Diet Fascists in the UK - unbelievable!

    From today's BBC news

"Ban on rerun of eggs TV advert

Reruns of a TV commercial from the 1950s which urged viewers to "go to work on an egg" have been banned.
An advertising watchdog said the slogan went against the principle of eating a varied diet.

The Egg Information Service had wanted to screen the advert, which featured comedian Tony Hancock, to celebrate its 50th birthday.

Author Fay Weldon, who headed the team which came up with the slogan, has described the decision as absurd.

The Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre (BACC) defended its decision, insisting that the adverts did not suggest a varied diet.

BACC spokesman Kristoffer Hammer said: "Dietary considerations have been at the centre of the new rules for advertising and in consideration of this we felt that these adverts did not suggest a varied diet.

    Shock

"The concept of eating eggs every day for breakfast goes against what is now the generally accepted advice of a varied diet and we therefore could not approve the ads for broadcast."

British Egg Information Service spokesperson Amanda Cryer said: "We have been shocked by this ruling as eggs are a healthy, natural food which are recommended by nutritionists."

"What's more, there are no restrictions on the number of eggs people can eat, which was recently confirmed by the Food Standards Agency, and between five and seven eggs a week would be totally acceptable for most people."

Ms Cryer added: "In addition, many other advertisers clearly promote their products to be eaten every day such as breakfast cereals so we are very surprised that eggs have been singled out in this way."

What really infuriates me about this ruling is this: the same people are allowing a Special K cereal advert which presents this challenge to viewers - 'eat a bowl for breakfast and another for lunch, and you "could" lose "up to" an inch off your waist'.

So they are banning the egg advert on the grounds that it "appears to be" encouraging people to eat the same breakfast each day, but they allow an advert that suggests people eat the same thing for TWO meals each day!

      Madness!

i totally agree. We are fed so much wrong information, it is really difficult to go against the received wisdom, like low fat is good, high protein bad, etc.

This is an enlightening article, i strongly recommend anyone on Atkins reads it

That is exactly what I was thinking as I read that - Special K want you to eat 2/3rds of your meals as their cereal - which, may I add, has sugar in it!

That IS crazy! All the carbs and sugar in special K are so much worse. It's all about money and who ever has the most wins in the advertizing world. The h*** with actual facts.

I have a good Diet Facism in the UK story too. I went into a pharmacy the other day to buy a jar of Ketostix. Guess what ... I was told that the government has now issued a decree that they can only be obtained on doctor's prescription. So I said: "But I'm doing Atkins - I don't need to get a prescription". The pharmacist looked down her nose at me and said:"That is precisely why the government has issued this notification - it's time people were aware how dangerous Atkins is." It's quite amazing how many swear words can go through your head in 10 seconds. Sooooo.... I changed pharmacies. I got a bottle quite happily at the next one. Guess which pharmacy I WON'T be going back to.

The banning of the advert has started a furore - so much that there is a petition about it that you can sign and comment on if you want!!

I mentioned the allowing of the Special K advert too in my comments!!
