I have a friend who is on induction...she has a 10 yr. old daughter who is about 50lbs overweight.
Her Daughter wants to do this with her....can anyone tell me if the rules are different for an overweight child?
For a child would you skip induction and just concentrate on eliminating the sugar and white flour from her diet?

Im sure someone can give you a better answer than me but, as no ones replied i'd say eating from maintenance sounds good? so yeah, as you said, cut out sugar and white flours...

The best bet would be to see what her doctor says though, many of them are anti-atkins.

Hello Owl, my daughter does this woe with me. I'm not as strict with her as I am with myself so she skipped the induction phase. I cut everything white out of her diet. Sugar, flour, rice, potatoes, milk. No processed foods if I can help it. Definately no simple carbs! On fruits I allow her berries, green apples, cantalope, plums, bing cherries, grapefruit, things that are lowest on the Glycemic index, nothing tropical! Breads, I allow her bread that is made without flour. It's organic and made with sprouted wheat and flax seeds. It has one gram of sugar per serving and she loves it. For chips, I allow her sun chips every so often, which are made with whole grain. She went through the same detox from sugar and simple carbs as we do with induction. She's well aware of detox headaches! It helps ward her away from sugar since now she knows how toxic it is. Remember for every inch our girl grows tall, they're allowed 10 pound, seven pounds for boys. My daughter will be thirteen in september and is 5'6". She'll take this experience of this woe and wol with her through life long after I'm gone! Shes lost 15 pounds. She's a slow and steady loser. Which I find better. But she's also learned healthier eating habits along her journey. No fast food joints for her. She's very Carb Aware at her age. Hope this helps. I'm always open for conversation if need be regarding this matter. Here's to good health ,YOUNG AND OLD!

        Hi Sherri,

I think it is great you are creating a legacy of health in your daughter. I mean, if the tendency is to be heavy in a family then learning how to eat healthy at an early age is vital.

The diet the Atkins Center used for children and teenagers is outlined in a book called Feed Your Kids Well by Fred Pescatore, MD. Dr. Pescatore was the associate director of the Atkins Center during the 1990s. Children and teenagers have different nutritional needs than adults. So putting them on an "adult" diet isn't good in the long run.

Also, it's important for your friend to involve her child's doctor in this. Like adults, children and teens can be overweight due to problems like thyroid disease. So those things need to be ruled out before she starts any diet. And again, because children and teens have different nutritional needs, their weight loss needs to be monitored closely.

          Good luck.

Thanks Lindseyd! Yes genetics play a big role in myself and my daughters weight. She's growing up the same way as I was. I call her my minnie me. She had a physical before starting this woe and is followed by the same physician as I am. It's always important to see a doctor before any weight loss plans, young and old. It will detect thyroid disorders, prediabetes and always good to have lab work done for a base line too. No matter what age you are when you are planning a weight loss plan. You take care Lindseyd! I'll come visit you in your journal chat soon!
