  • Is Atkins really the answer?

    Hello everyone,

ok so i've been trying to loose weight on and off for the last 2 years or more but keep failing. I did Atkins a few years ago and lost weight, i was about 20lbs from my target then i started eating bad and was back to square one. i'm going to new york at christmas and really want to have one holiday in my life that i will enjoy and not keep thinking how fat i am.
I'm trying a low fat diet at the moment but keep falling off and i think i should give atkins one last try but i'm not sure what do you think? and if i do what tips could you give me so i don't fall again.

Atkins isnt so much a diet but a way of life, if you are not planning to follow this plan forever then it's not going to get you the results you want forever - just temporary.

Only you can make the decision on whether that is what you want or not!

Atkins CAN WORK for everybody, but Atkins IS NOT for everybody. What do I mean? Scientifically, Atkins will work for every person, but it's a matter of personal preference. If you hate the foods, or don't feel happy with the plan, then Atkins won't work for you.

So ask yourself if Atkins is right for you. Do you like the foods? Do you enjoy the way you feel? Is it something that you can follow for the rest of your life?

If you want to be a success, get a CLEAN 2-week induction. This means no frankenfoods, no caffiene, no coffee, no soda. ONLY eat foods from the acceptable foods list. After that 2 weeks, your cravings should be gone, and you should have control over your eating. My next advice is to move to OWL immediately. There is NO REASON to extend induction. Moving to OWL gives you more food choices and freedom, and less boredom.

Mandy, I agree with Emma. Atkins is about changing the way you eat permanetly -- as are all good "diets." If you are one of those people who knows you don't like the way you feel when eating sugar and lots of carbs; if you want to make a permanet lifestyle change; if you need the appetite supression Atkins offers; if you are willing to do Atkins the RIGHT way -- read the book, go up the rungs adding foods back like nuts, fruits, starchy veggies, and whole grains; and finally, if you are tired of food controlling you.... then YES, Atkins is the answer. But, it's not a quick fix and takes a lot of dedication to do it right and be successful. The great news is, though... it WORKS (and I've never felt better!).

Best of luck, whatever you decide.

Re: Is Atkins really the answer?

I used to try all kinds of "diets" from low calorie/fat to the cabbage soup diet. Ugh! I was always grumpy and bloated and felt like I was never going to get to my goal weight. Then I finally got onto the Atkins WOE, and I did a clean induction. In the first two weeks I lost 6 pounds! That was motivation enough for me to continue. I only have about 12 pounds left to lose, and I am losing it slowly. I work out everyday and noticed that I didn't feel sluggish or that numb pain you get in the pit of your stomach from not eating enough. I love eating my protein and fats. I definitely get more fiber from this WOE than any other "diet" I have been on. I am on OWL and completely enjoying my apples and berries right now. Even though I'm not at my goal weight, everyone comments on how tone and slim I look. I feel so much better since I started giving my body what it needs to function. I would not start Atkins thinking that it is a short term fix to get to your goal weight. This WOE is teaching you how to eat right. Once you learn the right things to feed your body, you will never need to "diet".

Good luck and I hope it works for you!!!

Re: Is Atkins really the answer?

My tip is this: Stop thinking of it as just a way to lose weight. Whenever I become frustrated, I try to remind myself that my only other alternative would be to ditch Atkins and resort back to my former unhealthy ways. It really works.

Re: Is Atkins really the answer?

I'm with Juli, it can work for everyone but you have to enjoy what you are eating, and be able to follow it properly, as with any practical and well balanced woe. i have a friend that's currently extrememly successful on weight watchers, losing 25 lbs in 4 months and looks fabulous. She'd tried Atkins, and though she was losing, she was misreable with her food choices in induction, the owl rules etc etc. Me however, i'm the exact opposite of her, i've done weight watchers 3 times and though i was losing couldn't stick to it as i didn't like the low fat food choices, having to count points etc etc. In the end, we have both ended up successful and happy and at goal having found what works for us and what we can live with. We now actually almost eat exactly the same (i'm in maintenance), but we got here through a very different route.

Atkins is not the be all end all for everyone, just as South Beach isn't, Weight watchers isn't etc, you have to find what works FOR YOU. I think the most important things to keep in mind are: is it a healthy plan (not a crash diet), will you enjoy the food choices, and can you make it a lifestyle change and enjoy a variety of healthy food groups for life.
