  • MILK QUESTION - Lactose the evil!

Hey guys.... i'm an atkiner of way too long, I havn't been on induction for around a year, but since then have been low carb. I'm currently going back into induction and have a question.

I know we cant drink milk for numerous reasons, the main one being the Lactose. lactose is a form of cs Sugar, with a standard gladd of milk containing around 12g of carbs.

I've cut coffee (was an addict. go me.) and am having one cup of decaf tea a day (im cold! its winter here)

I have been using (for the last year) Lactose Free milk...so its basically Milk minus the sigar. A whole glass contains 3.2g of carbs/Sugar... so

CAN I HAVE A TINY SLURP OF SUGAR-FREE MILK IN MY DECAF TEA DURING INDUCTION?

    Thanks Mates!

What brand are you using, because according to this link: http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/117574.html

Also, I looked up an organic brand. http://www.organicvalley.coop/produc...13&cat=1&sub=7

It also has 13 grams of carbs per 8 ounce serving.

There is no fiber in milk, so you can't really subtract anything for a "net carb".

Hey! I live in Australia so you probably don't have the brand over there. It has 3.2 grams of carbs per whole glass.... no fiber, but that is the total carb/sugar count. A slurp probably had about 0.2g of carbs in it...just wanted to know if thats on induction oncer a day

It has les carbs because they dont try to cover the taste another way - its gross! But it is milk!

Do you have the nutritional information for it? Such as the total cals, fat grams, protein grams, carbs grams?

I looked up some Australian lactose-free milks.
          http://www.parmalat.com.au/products/...utritionalData

I put the nutritional info into a "hidden carb calculator" and the numbers are way off.

Hey, yeah! Thats the one... Whats a hidden carb calculator? How does lactose free milk have hidden carbs... I'M CONFUSED.

Also, with the hidden carbs, is a dash in a decaf tea once a day so bad?

            Thanks!

              Hi Dotultimate,
I'm in Australia too and haven't really had any of those lactose free milks myself. Is that the milk you are trying? The ones Megs has linked too? Because their stats really are confusing and the counts are per 100ml - less than a full glass and with sugar and galactose still listed
I think perhaps those milks are made for people who are lactose intolerant, but it still contains sugars - it might be better to steer clear of it perhaps. Just my opinion anyway

I've been having tea too in our chilly days atm
I put a tablespoon of cream into a milk jug and then add about 2 tablespoons of water, stir it, and then use some of this in my cup of tea, in lieu of milk. It still tastes nice

Hi! Where in Australia are you?

Is it ok to have cream in induction? I've been on atkins for over a year, but im slipping back into induction for a few months.... I really like something white in my tea!!! Its so cold these days!

                  I'm in Brisbane

Yes, on induction you're *allowed* to have an ounce of sour cream or three ounces of unsweetened heavy cream a day . . . one ounce = 28 grams in our measurements

Here's a sticky thread for you that might like, if you haven't seen it already, with the foods listed for induction:

I count 1 of our tablespoons as a fluid ounce of cream . . it's just slightly under 28g
(that's 4 teaspoons here in aussie land )

                      heh! have fun shopping

Re: MILK QUESTION - Lactose the evil!

A hidden carb calculator is like the one here:
                        http://www.lowcarb.ca/low-carb-tools/hidden_carbs.html

Also, I did a little more reading on "lactose-free" milks. They make them "lactose free" by adding lactase. Lactase is an enzyme which helps to digest lactose. So you're still getting that lactose in lactose free milk, only now it's been broken down into sugar components that can be digested by lactose intolerant folks.

Thanks for the info! Ok...so i've ditched the Lactose free milk (i only used it for decaf tea anyways) and i bought some thickened cream.... it says less than 1g carbs per serving etc etc... hope its the right one. Regardless, I had some last night and it was DELISH! Probably the first endulgance i've had in a looong looong time!
