  • Health Report on Obesity Epidemic

My DH passed this on to me and, though I haven't read it myself yet, he gave me the bullet points and mentioned that Atkins (ANA) is involved. Thought I would pass this on. - Melissa F

    The obesity epidemic

A researcher in the United States claims that the reason for the obesity epidemic is more than just the calories we eat and the lack of exercise. It's a substance that food manufacturers are widely using.

Re: Health Report on Obesity Epidemic

Very interesting. I think obesity is caused by a number of factors, including high caloric intake and too little exercise. But, I also know that we are directly a product of what we eat - so it really wouldn't be a surprise if our bodies are being skewed by additives etc. When I think of all the pestisides and things we just eat without thinking - kinda scary stuff. I wonder, in a 1000 years time, what influence it will all have had on evolution.

Just read the report...again they don't understand Atkins, even though they are giving positive reviews... Robert Lustig says..."If you look at the Atkins dier, the Atkins diet was no-carb, high-fat, no-carb and it worked." I am happy they are saying that Atkins works, but damnit, we DO eat carbs...

Re: Health Report on Obesity Epidemic

Thank you for posting this! I find some of what he says fascinating...and my Atkins journey is evidenced in what they are talking about here. I am PARTICULARLY interested in his views on high fructose corn syrup. Dr. A only briefly touched on HFCS, by saying it was bad but not elaborating on it too much. Reading a little more science about it will be interesting to me.

Norman Swan: Are you postulating here a fructose conspiracy, the way the tobacco industry had a nicotine conspiracy?

Robert Lustig: Well I can't call it a conspiracy per se. I certainly know, and they certainly know that they sell more of it when they add the fructose to it. That's why it's in there, otherwise why would it be in there? Do they know that this is actually harmful? That's what I don't know. There's no smoking gun, ultimately we found the smoking gun for smoking, you know we found the documents. I'm not prepared to say that about the food companies. I do not know that they know that they are hurting us. However, they definitely know they sell more, and it temporarily coincides with the advent of fructose being added to our diet.
