  • Stalling ... help?!

Hello everybody. I'm in my 2nd week of EI (4th week of Atkins) and I'm noticing that I'm stalling with my weight loss. In fact my scale showed about 2 lbs more than my last weigh-in 10 days ago. However, my scale also shows the amount of body fat and apparently I lost 2% of body fat since I started with Atkins.

A note on the side, I'm doing Extended Induction, as the book recommends it for getting blood sugar levels in control.

I'm wondering if these 2 lbs could be gained muscles due to my workout?
I'm doing 4 -5 times a week 30 - 45 minutes on my Crosstrainer, then situps, excercises for legs & butt, as well as weight training for upper body.

    Re: Stalling ... help?!

that could be the answer, the important fact here is that you lost %bodyfat wich is great, so If you are working out that might be the reason you gained weight, remember muscles weight more than fat. Another thing could be the period, usually we have more weight at these days.. Well, have a nice day, and dont worry, if you're doing things write there's nothing to worry about.

    My goal:
    I started Atkins: May 29th
    Breast: 90-90-90cm
    Waist: 78-72-66cm
    Hips: 94-87-87cm
    Body type:5' 2" inches (159cm)
I dont think I want to lose more weight, just complete correctly the phases. I LOVE ATKINS!

It could be that you're making muscle, yes. It could also be what we call PISS (Post Induction Stall Syndrome)... which seems to happen often after the induction period. If it's this last, your weight loss will start up again soon, never fear.

I'd wait a little while longer and if there's still no change you could try posting a couple of menus in the Review my Menu forum. Sometimes it's just a little thing that needs to be tweaked.

        Hi SwissMiss,

this is just a small part of Chapter 15,DANDR,please read it completely, again.

....if a pause in weight is genuine plateau,I require that it meet the following criteria:
        • You have experienced no weight loss or loss of inches for at least 4 weeks.
        • You have not started a new medication, such as hormone therapy, altered your exercise regimen or made any other significant lifestyle change.
        • You have examined your physical state carefully and are able to conclude that you have no symptoms indicative of a diet-related disorder(see Chapters 24-27) or a thyroid problem.
        • You can take a close look at you eating habits and honestly say that you've adhered to the same healthy, controlled carbohydrate eating plan that has brought you success up to now.

And as Sally wrote, post your menu, maybe you're making some mistakes, eating way to little,or not taking enough supplements.....

as written is book: A food diary and a carb gram counter are powerful tools to help you understand what may be blocking weight loss.

          Re: Stalling ... help?!

Also, LOTS of people around here have a pause after induction...It's even called "Post-Induction Stall Syndrome" here at ADBB. It's your body adjusting to the changes. Give it time and it will start moving again in the right direction.

Look in the stickies in the forums for the thread that gives some good explanation of what's happening.

Lots of people take this time to go ahead and move into rung 1 of the ONGOING WEIGHT LOSS PHASE. Note: Ongoing. Weight. Loss. The weight loss continues AND you get to add more food. ALSO, many people find that if they were "stalled" and start to add the food back in, they actually will start losing again...or losing faster.

          So, reconsider the extended induction.

Thanks a million for all your replies, explanations and advice. I do have to say, that I feel comfortable with the foods (and quantities) I eat, since I am tracking my food on fitday.com and also calculated my BMR.

I did read the chapters in the book regarding the different reasons for stalling weight loss. I actually read "Atkins Diabetes Revolution" and then "The New Diet Revolution" which I both still almost use daily for reference and also for re-freshing by re-reading.

I am having blood sugar tested end of July and I will also ask to have my blood checked for thyroid syndrome to see if everything is alright.

I hope my scale will soon show me lower weight figures again, as I find it very crucial for my motivation. Even though seeing the lower fat % on the scale - which dont' get me wrong is great.

If things don't change within a week, I will have my menu's reviewed and move to OWL earlier.

                hi swiss miss

I had a "pause" in weight loss of about 2 weeks right after induction . Sure enough things started to move again in the right direction after a little while . Also note that the body will often fill those emptying fat cells with water . It holds onto this for a while before it releases a special hormone that eliminates that water and you will notice a sudden loss on the scales ( also known as a visit from the whooshie fairy) you body will do its own thing in its own time so it really helps to be patient!

                Goodluck

                  Re: Stalling ... help?!

Hi Loo-See, the more I read in the books, the more my brain switches from thinking of doing just a diet (like with previous diets I've made, thinking I just gotta make it through the long dark tunnel until one day I can eat normally again - meaning the stuff that made me fat and kept me lazy) to realizing that I am changing my lifestyle for the better and that when I get to phase 4 (Gosh! And I hope I have the strenght to make it there) I will be eating what is good for me, good for my body and having the lifestyle which fits for me.

As to your question Atkins recommends in my book "The Diabetes Revolution" to stay on Induction until the blood sugar levels become better. My sugar levels have worsen in the past year, but before taking medication, I wanted to see if with Atkins and with excercise I can turn things around. I'm having labs test end of July. And I will decide then if I stay on EI or move to OWL.

Thanks Donna - that is a very interesting fact, which I didn't knew. I'll will stay patient.

It's amazing how determined I am to make a change. And this Forum is so incredibly helpful to fuel my determination and motivation. Seeing and reading all the various successes is just amazing and incredibly inspiring.

                  This Forum truly Rocks!

It is good to see you have read DANDR as well as the Diabetes Revolution and are committed to following all the Atkins phases

Have you taken measurements? Many of us find we lose inches even if we are not losing pounds!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Hi Elizellen, yes I've measured my body, but right now I am too scared to re-measure. I fear that if the result isn't positive I would struggle to keep motivated. :-(

I quite understand that feeling and can see you might not want to risk being upset, so forget the measuring (and the scales if you can) for the moment.

You have lost FAT according to those pesky scales while adding pounds, so it should be muscle you are adding, which is GREAT as more muscle means more calories burned even at rest

How are you feeling in yourself apart from not seeing the progress you hope for? Any improvement in how you feel?

                          Re: Stalling ... help?!

Well there are days that I feel okay and others I don't. I'm still finding my way with which food will do me good at certain moments (physically not emotionally). There are days I feel extremely hungry (even though I am in the highest level of Ketosis) and there are days I have to force myself to eat. Apart from currently being frustrated with the weight loss stalling, I'm also very frustrated in not seeing improvement on my morning blood sugar levels (after night fasting). But I'm hanging in there. I really want to change my woe and my way of life.
