    Re: Family reactions

Some people get mad at me and say... "you have to eat carbs! you can't just stop eating them! It's okay to have cookies and ice cream once in a while... otherwise it's just not healthy!" lol! then same person complains of stomache aches! Just keep my mouth shut and try to fly under the radar!

      Re: Family reactions

hi owl...first of all let me say that you look FANTASTIC! half the guy you were before. no wonder your mom was shocked. she is probably relieved to see you heading down a healthy path,

since this go round of atkins i have lost about 45 pounds. from my HIGHEST weight i have lost 70 pounds. i have had people i know walk right past me and not recognize me. i have SPOKEN to people who STILL do not recognize me.

those i see on a regular basis...it is a STRANGE thing. all my "guy friends" are TOTALLY supportive and tell me all the time what they think. my one best guy pal is jealous becasue he really wants to lost weight too and struggles a lot with his weight...."it's always the rum!"

but the girls......i work with a pile of teachers, most who are DIETERS....and surely they are watching each other CLOSELY.....all in all, from my highest weight, i went from a size 18 to a size 6. funny how not ONE of them has EVER mentioned it.

i did this for ME . where it would be nice to hear the compliments...i get them from those who matter to me....my kids love that i have the energy to be a cool mom. my man loves me no matter what but he is a leg man and loves shorts skirts and pretty girl clothes and it is fun to be able to wear those again.....i know he enjoys admiring me and that makes me smile....not even my best friend, who i saw a week before my wedding after dropping 45 pounds said a WORD! but her HUSBAND....he grabbed his chest and said "oh my lord! if you weren't getting mariried i'd get in line for you!"

of course this was all in jest. my point was that HE noticed. people are funny creatures and i don't mean ha ha funny!

      you look mahvelous!

        Re: Family reactions

My brother-in-law has also lost about 40 pounds recently. When I complimented him, he said that skinny people nearly always say something, but overweight ones seldom mention it. He thinks it's either jealousy or guilt, I think he's right.

Most of my family has been really supportive. My mom still tries to get me to eat fried chicken, rolls and mashed potatoes but doesn't push it on me when I say I can't eat it anymore. She's really proud of me. My kids, especially my daughter, are really sweet about it. My niece's say nice things (they're both overweight) but I try not to say much unless they ask because I know when I was 80 pounds overweight I didn't really want to hear what I already knew. My brother, who has the tact of a rock, tends to tell me to keep it up, but not really compliment me. He did tell a co-worker, though, about my success, so I guess he's proud of me in his way.

You're doing great, and you'll really wow them by Thanksgiving!

          Re: Family reactions

Now your brothers response I feel was a silent scream for help. He may want your help but may be to proud to ask? Are you two close? Maybe talking with him to see if he would be interested in doing what you're doing.

Sherri...I think you hit that one on the head. He has always made fun of us (siblings) as a group that it was our "destiny" to be "hujumbus"
He was VERY uncomfortable about my weight loss! I have thought about talking to him but it will have to be in just the right way at just the right time.

i did this for ME . where it would be nice to hear the compliments...i get them from those who matter to me....
Misplaced....I'll venture to say thats a blanket statement for most everyone here....thats the difference between reaching your goal or falling short.
          I guess a change can double as a "friend-o-meter"

              Re: Family reactions

OWL, I've found that people who also need to lose are typically the ones who don't mention my loss at all -- or just barely acknowledge it. I mean, with 80 pounds lost, it's hard to image they just don't notice. But if they acknowledge my loss, it seems it some how indicts them for NOT losing... Anyway, glad you got mostly positive reactions. You look terrific -- what a difference!

JOY, I too HATE hearing people say how and why Atkins won't work for them. I mean, ADORE(D) pasta... and ate sugar like there was no tomorrow. ANYONE can CHOOSE to do it. I also do my best to educate people about Atkins -- people I know well believe it's a healthy plan, I think. My co-workers especially -- I guess because they typically see us the most? I usually don't mention Atkins in casual, quick conversations b/c I don't want to get into it.... "I cut out sugar and white flour" is usually where I leave it.

MS -- OMG, I can't believe those women haven't mentioned your losses... I mean, holy cow -- look at you! Girls can be so hateful...
