  • @#&! ONIONS! Other legal foods to watch out for?

So everything's going along just fine and I'm thrilled every morning when my kstick turns purple, then BAM. Beige for 2 days. After going back through my food diary, the only change I've made is I had onions for 2 days. (They were Vidalias, I'm Southern, it's the law that I eat some ). So I learned my lesson on that one and know that onions need to be crossed off my list. I've done okay with tomatoes, though. So I wondered what other legal foods have caused problems for others? Once I get back into the pink/purples, it would be nice to know what I should be more cautious with, particularly vegetables. Thanks for any pointers.

Do you log your foods?? I end up seeing onions as having 0.7 *net* carbs per *tablespoon*. That seems like a lot for me... no?

I just keep a written food diary - I don't use Fit Day. I was going by the list of acceptable foods for Induction where it says up to a cup a day is okay (although I didn't have nearly that much.)

TBW, I know FitDay can be a pain sometimes, but I do recommend you use it instead of a journal type. It has really helped me really stay on track on my carbs as well as all the percentages period. Try it out for a while and see that it really is helpful.

Also, you can eat plenty of other low carb veggies like cucumbers and lettuce ofcourse. Or try Jicama. That has a lot of fiber you can subtract. Hope that helps.

I'm not southern, but those Vidalias are TO DIE FOR! I can't get them very often, but when I do, they get me in as much trouble as you! They have knocked me out of ketosis...I usually fry them up with red peppers in oil and butter and a bit of thyme. Soooooo yummy...but in moderation...

Wow, it says onions as a cup a day during induction?? That would be like, over 20g carbs in itself according to fitday.

Anyway, I really suggest using one online that gives you the actual carb counts (fitday, dailyplate, sparkpeople, etc). They're free and pretty easy to use.

Heaven, aren't they? I guess they have a really high sugar content - which is why they're so good. 24 hrs later I'm still not back in ketosis, but surely being super good yesterday and today will get me there soon. I guess I'll just have to work my way through new foods and see what happens. I have been very careful adding new foods as I'm starting up the rungs, but I thought since onions were on the induction list they would be okay. Frustrating as heck, but I'm trying to find a bright spot so I'm hoping my little break from ketosis will get things fired up again. A girl can dream...

And to everyone else, yes - I'll try Fitday again. I looked at it and tried it for a few days, but it seemed like it took forever. Maybe once I get the hang of it it'll go faster for me. I only have a tiny window of time for it while my kids are napping, but it sounds like it's worth another try. Thanks.

Re: @#&! ONIONS! Other legal foods to watch out for?

The sugar content in sweet onions like Vidalia, Maui Maui, or Walla Walla are the same as the sugar content in a regular onion. The sweet onions taste "sweet" because they don't have as much of the sulfur containing compounds that give onions their 'kick'.

If you look at the USDA's Nutrient Database, 1 cup (about 115 grams) of onion has 10.75 grams total carbs, 2 gram fiber. So net carb of 8.75.

Make sure you are eating about 115 grams (which is alittle over 3 ounces by weight). You might want to invest in a food scale to make sure you are measuring/weighing your foods properly.

Wow - thanks for the scoop on onions. The sulfur aspect does make sense. I didn't weigh the onions, just measured them in a cup and had 1/2 cup, two days in a row. I think I'm just going to forget about onions for awhile and stick to things that haven't caused me trouble.

you can have onions just dont eat a heap. Make a dinner that will last 3 nights and use a whole onion.... eat it - flavor your food with it, just be smart.

Onions are really high on the glycemic index because of the glucose levels in them. www.glycemicindex.com is a good refference for foods to use that have a lower glycemic load. I use leeks that are lower on the index.

                          Good suggestion, Sherri!
I use spring onions (green onions?) a lot for the same reason.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
