    Is it true if u go to your old eating habits after finishing with atkins u will gain the weight u lost and a lot more !!!??? this is what this woman is saying in this video ?

    Atkins is a plan for life, not just for you to lose your weight, its something you will stick to for the rest of your life, so basically by the end of it the only things that you wouldnt be able to eat would be sugar and white flours...

    I havent watched the video, but yes, thats true, your old eating habits got you where you are now, of course they can put you back there!

      I'm disappointed by this very biased and patronising video clip.
      In ANY diet if you return to "your old eating habits" you're bound to put on weight.
      I'm positive proof of that .. I stop paying attention to what I eat ... my weight spirals up.

      If you were on a weight watchers calorie controlled diet, and you reached your target weight, and then thought "to h£ll with this" and returned to your previous eating habits, you'd end up back where you started.
      To work, ANY diet requires adherence to the principles for as long as you want to lose or maintain weight.

      I've been 4 weeks without beer pasta rice potatoes chocolate etc etc .. things I LOVE and I've lost weight .. I bet you any money that if I went back to the way I used to eat I'd put on weight. It's not exactly a tricky conclusion to reach.
      As much as anything this is a mind set .. right now, I want to lose weight MORE than I want to drink beer or eat mashed potatoes .. OR chocolate

        Ok lets say after I reached my weight goal and decided to be done with the atkins diet I will eat anything I want but I will be more considrable like eating brown bread instead of white and eating less sugar I dont think I will return to my starting diet I may gain 1 pound or 1/2 pound at least

          sorry hun but i can't give you the advice youre wanting!

          the only way to follow this plan is to do it by the book which means following all the rungs into pre-maintenance then maintenance...

          it's a way of life, not a quick fix!

            Atkins himself says .. (from memory) monitor your weight ... if you gain 5lbs .. restart to keep your weight in check

                Yes, but if you follow the plan the way it was intended and do the Ongoing Weight Loss phase, and the premaintenance phase, you will add all those foods back in. Yes, during maintenance phase (and even in premaintenance) you could be eating whole grain breads and still be on "Atkins".

                It is very unfortunate that a majority of the people do not even know that there is more to the Atkins plan than just the strict TWO WEEK induction phase. All foods except for refined white flour and sugar/high fructose corn syrup get added back into our diets during the OWL/premaintenance phases, so there really is no need to ever go "off" Atkins.

                However, if I were to return to the bad eating habits that got me fat to begin with, I WILL get fat again. It doesn't matter whether I go on Atkins, SOuth beach, weight watchers, or the Cabbage Soup diet....when I return to my old, bad eating habits I will gain the weight back.

                  Have you read the book fully? I know it took me a while to get through the first few chapters. I had a few misconceptions as well.
                  This report contradicted a lot of things that were said in the book. I watched all four parts. The first said that during the first phase you couldn't eat veggies. Later it said that you couldn't exercise because you would get light headed. The book says you HAVE to eat your veggies and that you MUST exercise. Without exercising, don't expect good results.

                  I do understand what you're saying about eating less sugar, etc. I've thought about that too; however, now that I'm doing Atkins I'm re-thinking a few things.
                  Why am I going to go back to eating refined sugar and flour?
                  I can live without cake, cupcakes, etc. To be honest, I've been on Atkins for almost a month without even consuming splenda. Because quite frankly I don't think Splenda is healthy either.
                  I do miss rice and bread, but when I have these two items I gorge on them. I don't eat as many veggies as I am now. Now, Dr. Atkins did say in the book that it was okay to consume say a baked potato once in a while. And I know someone who does Atkins (maintenance phase) who eats the occasional rice or potato BUT she eats a small portion.
                  I think that's one of the things that Atkins teaches us, portion control.

                  To answer your question. I'm overweight, and I didn't get that way by having controlled portions or eating more veggies than rice/potatos. I got there by eating a plethora of unhealthy foods, especially in the form of junk food or quick and easy snacks. If I go back to eating that way of course I'm going to gain all of my weight back and more.
                  It's the ugly truth. Atkins isn't for everyone and it isn't a quick fix. You gained that weight over time, it's going to take time for your body to adjust to this new way of life and for it to get accustomed to eating smaller portions and much healthier foods.

                    If you reach maintenance you'll probably be surprised by what you can eat. You'll find ways to satisfy your whims quite easily.
                    When I started Atkins it certainly wasn't with any idea of eating this way permanently... yet it happened... and I live in Italy, land of pasta, pizza and pane... and I love to cook and eat.
                    I've taken very few food categories out of my diet... and what I have taken out, I have great substitutes for. I know that if I go back to an ultra carby way of eating, I'l gain everything back again in a flash. So will most people.
                    If you go back to eating more carbs than you should, but being more careful than before, that would be a lot better... but in the long run even "being careful but outside the rules", statistics show that for most, carb creep happens and eventually they end up at square one again.

                      If you go back to your old eating habits, you'll end up with your old body.

                      BUT! Once you reach maintenance, through the proper steps of adding food groups back in slowly, you can live and eat happily, without feeling at all deprived. I did it before having my baby--after reaching my goal, I only strayed about 4 lbs from goal over 3 years! And during that time, I could enjoy potatoes, popcorn, bananas and, yes, even bread. But Atkins taught me to be mindful of the food choices I made, and to learn the lesson of consequences.

                      You can't "go on Atkins" to lose X amount of weight and then "go off" it and not expect a return of unwanted pounds. It's a mindset.

                        What everyone has said is right. I would add that if all you do is drop the sugar and white flour you would be way better off and might eventually end up at a pretty healthy weight. I'm in my third year and I have learned about foods that work and don't work. I can eat apples without a problem. Potatoes on the other hand are a disaster. You must believe what Atkins said and learn from it. Though Going strictly by the book for the rest of your life is more than I can do.

                          The point of the ongoing weight loss phase is to add all the foods back in to your diet one at a time so that you can see what you can eat and what you can't. It's where we DO GET to create a custom Atkins plan that works for us as individuals for life. That's the point of OWL and premaintenance--to find out that apples work for you, but potatoes don't. That I can eat beans without problems, but peanuts and other nuts send me into a tailspin and make me NUTS! LOL

                          I'll say it again, that the preconceived and ill-informed notions about what 'Atkins' is about is unfortunate. Too many people think that the entire Atkins plan is induction, or maybe just the first bit of OWL instead of the entire plan. And, I'll shout it to the rooftops that BECAUSE I do it/did it by the book is the REASON I absolutely feel that I can do it for life.

                            That video was so inaccurate! How can you call that news reporting! They said there are no vegetables or fruit allowed! They said it is 'only protein'... What a load of *rap!
                            How is it possible for new reporters and dieticians who should know better,to misrepresent Atkins so reprehensibly! That video makes me really mad! No wonder people are so misinformed.

                              Yes, if you eat sensibly -- with very limited sugar and white flour, and carefully watching your starches, "treats" only on rare occasions, AND keep exercising -- it's certainly possible to keep the weight off. BUT, guess what? What I just described is basically the Maintenace phase of Atkins... Like Flotilla says above, it's about making good choices and portion control. Most of us got into this situation because we are unable to do that -- our body doesn't respond to certain foods and sugar like most people's. Atkins -- both during OWL and Maintenace -- helps us stay in control...
