  • Anyone else here from Kimkins?

    Hi,

I used to be a member at the Kimkins site until I got sick. It seems a lot of people there were getting sick & have left.

Just wondering if there are any others like me who used to be there?

    Welcome to the board!

I thought kimkins was some kind of cat food at first. Wow, that's a tough eating program. I wonder why people were getting sick? Did they all eat the same food and get food poison or something?

I'm glad you're here! There's a vast valley of difference between what I read about K's and what Atkins really is...a way of eating for life. I hope you read through the book and this site to gain a great understanding of taking care of you.

    Best wishes!

Re: Anyone else here from Kimkins?

It seems many people are getting sick because of not eating enough calories (including me) and then for some (not me), they were taking laxatives every day as "Kimmer" recommended and they developed some problems from that.

I haven't gotten an Atkins book yet but do plan to get one soon. I learned about Kimkins from a magazine article and it's the only kind of "low carb" plan I know. Well, it was a bust but I thought I'd give this a try before completely giving up.

Yuck, life time of laxatives that can cause kidney and bowel problems from abuse. Totally sounds like the beginings of eating disorders.

yes...a LOT of disordered eating behavior going on over there!

I wasn't sure what to think about it all until I was made aware of some blogs out there talking about the MANY "negatives" of Kimkins...I read through a lot of them and saw how much sense they make...and then left the Kimkins site for good.

I even found where some people started a petition asking to have that whole mess investigated...I couldn't wait to sign it as I am really concerned about some people there who are doing some serious damage to themselves. I'm especially concerned about some teenagers that are there, some as young as 14 even!

that diet really sounds scary and extremely unhealthy.
I'm glad I found Atkins first and had never even heard of kimkins before I joined this board.
I signed the petition, a person that makes money off the desperation of people should be shut down.

                        Hi CareyAnne,

Kimkins is a lowcarb, lowfat, lowcal, lowfiber plan. On the site, there are 5 variations of the plan but they're all very low in cals...500-700 cals. At first, there's an initial whoosh of weight loss but then around week 3, there's an inevitable stall. At this point, the leadership there encourages members to go "even lower"...so people end up having closer to 300 cals a day. And then because of the lack of fiber, there are inevitable "potty" issues so then members are told to go ahead and take daily laxatives because supposedly the latest research shows that they're not addictive after all. (yeah, right) They even go on to describe all the different kinds of laxatives out there and Kimmer's opinion on which ones work the best. The preferred recommended ones are senna products like exlax and smooth move senna tea for a "cleansing" experience.

A LOT of desperate people are being taken advantage of over there...the owner is making $60 a pop on each desperate member...and as I mentioned before, even young teenagers as young as 14...whose bodies are still developing...are learning some very dangerous "dieting practices."

I totally agree! And with the allegations of false advertising (using fake success stories/pics) and even possibly having lied about her own weight loss testimony (no one knows because she won't meet anyone face to face)...she seems to be nothing but a money-grubbing con artist preying on vulnerable young girls and women.

Re: Anyone else here from Kimkins?

You know what though? Why are the parents of some 14 year old paying $60 for their daughter/son to develop an eating disorder?
I know I worked when I was 14 and made a bit of money, but I didn't have a credit/bank card to make a purchase such as that. Don't you need a credit card to order that service online?
                            It's a pity.

I don't know how anyone could be on that diet. Being constipated is one of the worst feelings in the world. And the problems with laxatives goes muuuuch deeper than just getting addicted to them.
So no one actually knows "Kimmers?"

Anyway, I'm glad you came over to this forum. Check out the stickies posted...some have the basic rules and the legal veggies and foods. This way of eating isn't low fat, and it allows you to eat a lot more than regular "diets." But keep in mind this is a lifestyle change and not a quick fix.
                            You'll do wonderfully here.

                              Thanks for the welcome!

I'm learning a lot about Atkins but not sure if i I should follow the '72 version or the later version?

As for the question about the parents of the 14 year old...kids today have way more money at their disposal than we EVER dreamed of having at that age, so there's no tellin' what all is going on there. Oh, and I do think Kimmer takes other forms of payment through the mail, so the parents may not even know about what their teens are doing.
