  • Not doing Atkins Properly

My friend saw I lost about 8 pounds in a month, and he's been doing the diet....but not properly. He eats a bowl of cereal a day and has protien the rest. Cookie Crisp cereal i might add. I told him you can't put ANY sugar in your body otherwise you won't turn your metabolism into a fat burning. He said that he will loose weight but not as quick.

Do you think he will loose any weight at all doing this? Do you think he'll just retain the fat from the meat & cheese products and just get fatter cause he's eating cereal?

Well, you're correct that he certainly ISN'T doing the Atkins Diet, and I sincerely hope he isn't going around telling everyone he is on Atkins.

Will he lose weight? It's a possibility. Fred Pescatore, MD was the associate director of the Atkins Center during the mid-1990s. He wrote in one of his books that he lost weight on a chocolate pudding diet he devised for himself. So anything is possible.

But there's a difference between losing weight in a healthful manner and losing weight in an unhealthful manner. I fear that your friend is on the "unhealthful" path of losing weight. Breakfast cereals are far from healthful, if you ignore the health claims on the packaging and read the label carefully. And eating just meat and cheese, well, that's not very healthful either.

But it's your friend's decision and his life/overall health. The most you or we can do is advise him to adopt a more healthful weight loss regimen.

I want to win this debate with him if he will loose any weight or not. He tells me that if he just cuts the the cakes & bread out he'll loose weight. He eats a bowl or two of 'cookie crisp' cereal, puts sugar in his coffee, & chews gum every day along with eating protien.

I tried to tell him that the 1 or 2 bowls of cereal he is eating in one meal is way off the charts with carb and the protien diet won't work because he won't change his metabolism around to a fat burning instead of carbohydrate burning.

Do you think he'll loose any weight at all this way? Will he just retain the fat he's intaking because he's adding sugar to his diet?

Why exactly are you wanting to compete or win a debate with someone?

Those sorts of things tend to project our attention away from ourselves and the strength and self-discipline we are developing as healthy eaters. To be paying so much attention to what someone else is doing isn't very productive.

Let him do what he wants. YOU know what works, and you know what works for you.
