  • -OH NO- Doctor called setting up first appointment for LapBand surgery som...

Doctor called setting up first appointment for LapBand surgery sometime in the next few weeks or months.Going on the 29th of august for a first meeting. I never thought I'd say this but i'm not as happy to have got the call as I would have been before finding out about Atkins and ADBB. This place and everyone I talked to so far has been an eye opening experience and therefore I am not sure if I want to get the Lapband surgery. Tomorrow morning (24th) will be my forth day on Atkins and even though it may not seem like much for everyone else it is for me. I havent cheated to date and I strongly believe in being able to continue Atkins and yet the LapBand still haunts me. For those of you who do not know what the LapBand procedure is just google it and look at some video's etc.. it's a minor and not to invasive. I just hope I can, in the end make the right decision...................................any comments or emails and/or private msg's welcomed sincerily. Thankyou for all your support so far and most of all my new friends and friends to be.

Hi ! i would certainly give atkins a good go before i had surgery. I have seen so many people have success eating this way . I myself was a real yoyo dieter and have been doing atkins since christmas and i cant even imagine not eating this way forever. I enjoy the foods so much and love to get creative in the kitchen. Even baking atkins friendly cakes and desserts for special occasions that i dont feel i am even on a diet!
I have dropped a heap of weight and feel fantastic and everyone says I look great ! ( sneaking peek in mirror -- yeah they are right ! lol) Once you get past the first few weeks on atkins it all becomes second nature and so easy and you will find yourself shrinking! GOODLUCK!!!

      Hello, Pete

      Welcome to the ADBB family.

Pete, I would certainly give Atkins more time before I resorted to lapband surgery. You've gotten through 3 days of a clean induction already - that is a huge accomplishment! Those are the hardest ones, and it gets easier as it goes.

If you will continue doing Atkins by the book, I am sure that you could reach your goal without the surgery. I have tried lots of ways to lose weight, but this is the single, only way of living that works for me. So far I have lost 72 pounds from my 5' 2.5" frame. I sincerely think that it is possible for you to succeed.

Stick close to the board, post often, and ask any questions that you may have. We would be very happy to help you in any way that we can.

      Best wishes to you.

Hey Donna and Marie..thx for the support and advice. Indeed I do plan to continue for a while..in fact I had not planned on stopping in the first place. The surgery won't be for a while still considering there are still a bunch of people going before me..If ever everything goes really well with atkins..then I WILL cancel the surgery..

Hey Pete. Congratulations on your weight loss thus far. That is great! I agree with the others when I say give Atkins more time. Why have a procedure you don't need. This WOE/WOL will work if you stick to it. Good luck.

              First off, welcome to Pete!

The others have said it well...no need to subject yourself to surgery if you can lose the weight on your own. Not to mention much more cost effective Following Atkins by the book could be the best thing you've ever done for yourself.

It's always good to keep your options open, though. As you said, the actual surgery won't be for some time down the road so you've got ample time to decide whether it's right for you or not.

Best of luck either way you choose and if you need anything feel free to give a shout!

Pete! Give Atkins TIME! Like Mitzi said, you are already through the hardest days of induction, it gets sooo much easier the longer you do it.

A friend of mine was a lifetime member of Weight Watchers (she reached goal about 4 times--after regaining all her weight plus about 20 lbs more each time), and had been on every diet plan known to man except Atkins. At well over 300 lbs, she had gastric bypass 4 years ago and once again lost all her weight. Within two short years, she had regained 50 lbs. NOW she is on Atkins, and has kept the weight OFF for two years. I know lap band is way less invasive than GBP, but it's still surgery. It's still drastic. Your doc will probably put you on a high-protien diet afterward, so why not beat him to the punch?

Give it a shot. We're pulling for ya!!!

You sound like your head is in the Atkins game. That is the most important part. Plus you have 3 days of Induction behind you (the hardest days). I am thinking positive that you will be cancelling that surgery before very long.

You guys are really motivating me..Honestly speaking I will continue right until surgery date and then decide if I have made enough progress on atkins not just losing weight but also mentally and physically how much better I feel. I am confident everything will go well i'm curently on day 4 of induction (going so fast) and tomorrow will be day 5. I tell you that for a guy like me not to have eaten even 1 sugary thing in the past few day's is already and accomplishment. Im taking in all my water..much easier then I thought really..I think I could go past 64oz of water to because I heard you could drink an extra 8oz for every 25 pounds you have to lose therefore I have to drink and extra 7 8oz glasses of water!! LOL..overdose

Okay, I took your advice and looked up some info on lap band surgery. Here's a little bit about diet after lap band. I would much rather eat my steak and pork chops and zucchini and salads and cheesecake and lose weight the Atkins way!! It may be for some people, but I think it should be an absolute last resort and if you can stick with Atkins, wouldn't you prefer that? I wouldn't rush into surgery if there's another more pleasant way to lose weight! Either way, you're going to have to change how you eat, right?
                      http://womenshealth.about.com/od/fit...losssurg_3.htm
I'll just quote part of it--
The first 3 to 4 days following Adjustable Gastric Lap-Band surgery patients must follow a clear liquid diet.
If you are a regular coffee, tea, or soda drinker you should be aware that no caffeine is permitted for the first three months after surgery. Carbonated beverages; both diet and regular may cause gas, bloating, and an increase in stomach size due to the carbonation and are not recommended at any time for Lap-Band patients.
The second phase of the Lap-Band diet consists of 5 to 6 weeks of a modified full liquid diet; the key component of this phase is consuming two ounces of a protein shake every hour for ten to twelve hours a day with two ounces of other liquids such as soup, baby food, or sugar-free gelatin three times a day.
During the second six weeks following Lap-Band surgery patients may eat food that is shredded in a food processor prior to eating. The basic foods on the Lap-Band diet include meats or other forms of protein, vegetables, and salads. The Lap-Band diet does not include most bread, potatoes and other starchy vegetables.
After Lap-Band surgery the stomach will never hold more than 4 to 6 ounces per meal, so making every bite count is essential for healthy and nutritionally rounded weight loss success.
Certain foods may never be well tolerated by Lap-Band patients. These foods include:
                      • Meats that are especially tough such as steak and pork chops. Some Lap-Band patients have difficulty digesting other meats that contain gristle such as hamburger.
                      • Oranges and grapefruits may not be tolerated unless the membrane is removed before eating.
                      • The seeds and/or skins of all fruits and vegetables.
                      • High fiber vegetables such as celery and sweet potatoes.
                      • Spicy foods.
                      • Fried foods.
                      • Certain spices including cinnamon, pepper, or onion or garlic salt.
                      • If you are unable to tolerate milk, it’s important to add other calcium and protein rich foods such as cottage cheese. Dry milk can be added to foods for added protein.

When I was 3 days into Atkins I was just turning from a skeptic to "hum maybe this is working a little". If you have never tried Atkins or Low-carb there is a chance that this will make you understand why you have gained so much weight and will let you see how much easier weight control is when you cut out the carbs. Plus you will see many other healthful benefits. However, it is not magic - you must commit yourself at some point. But give it time in a few months you may be amazed what you learn.

I'd echo the chorus of "Give Atkins time before any surgery". I feel sure you won't need to take this drastic step.

I'd hate to commit to that restrictive way of eating for life.. Especially when Atkins allows you to eat so many things..

Why don't you tell the doctor you want to postpone the surgery for about 9 months.. That would give you sufficient time to know if you can do it on your own.. Not to mention the reward of not having to go under the knife.. Just look in the before and after pictures on this site.. There are any number of people who have made the journey you are on. They have succeeded... YOU CAN TOO!
