  • Beer?

    Hi guys

I wasn't a huge beer drinker before but I have to say I miss it on a hot day, and have NO idea what I'm going to do without it when hockey is on . Does anyone drink it once in a while without stalling too much? I'm going to a beer tasting festival which I've planned for MONTHS in a couple of weeks and I would like a little taste of the chocolate beer.... Oh well maybe I'll bring my own flask of gin and IMAGINE it's beer if everyone says it's too carby (I'm so classy).

    Re: Beer?

Obviously all of it's a no-no if you're just starting out and haven't climbed to the alcohol rung of OWL.

I guess it comes down to what's more important to you and whether or not you're willing to pay the price of knocking yourself out of ketosis, dealing with the cravings and probable weight gain, and then working yourself back into it all.

The beer is going to be mega carby - not to mention all the empty calories.

It takes some time to adjust to going without, but IMHO the rewards are well worth it and really, in the whole scheme of things, it's not that much time to go without. However, if you're gonna do what you're gonna do, know that it might wreak havoc on your system for a couple of days and it may be hard to get back on track.

I hope you have a great time!!

I used to be a big beer drinker, im now a huge wine drinker! i dont really miss beer, i think theres been one day when ive had it, however it was a light beer - which isnt too bad as i was on the alcohol rung at the time!

its whats important to you at the end of the day! Gin would be a much better choice!

Miller light claims to be like 3.2 carbs or something for 1 serving, Dont quote me on that, I know it says it right on the label in the front in easy to read size letters

I drink Michelobe Ultra and if I just have it one day it doesn't seem to have much effect weight loss wise. But when I drink it too often (which usually happens lol) I totally stall and then gain. Also my cravings pick up.

I never have regular beer or even light beer - too risky for me. lol I won't even have a sip!

Typically I stick to rum and coke or wine. lol sadly still too often.

            Re: Beer?

I do drink beer. VERY rarely. And only after I'd climbed through all of the rungs (not just the alcohol rung) and had gotten an idea of how many carbs I can eat per day. If I could only eat 30 or 40 carbs/day, I wouldn't even waste my time with beer. Since I can eat 90+ a day and still lose, a "real" beer is a special treat, one that I enjoy. I don't drink that michelob ultra crap. I will look up carb counts at www.realbeer.com for the beer I'm interested in, and if it's something I'm willing to "spend" in carbs, I might have one bottle.

Remember that when you drink, your body isn't knocked out of ketosis and back to a glucose-burning system (unless you consume too many carbs), BUT, it *does* have to burn off the alcohol first before you can resume burning fat. This means that anything you EAT will be stored as fat until the alcohol is burned off. Hence, the "stall" that commonly happens with drinking.

You've also got to judge this on how strong your resolve is while intoxicated. Are you a person who will order a pizza and nachos because you're having beer, or are you a person who can enjoy the beer and not binge or go off-plan?

And when I have a beer, it's ONE beer. Any more than that, and it's too many carbs, too many empty calories, and a nutritional waste of time.

Thanks for your input guys, and special thanks for the link Juli. It's nice to know that when I'm at the appropriate rung I might be able to have beer on special occasions. I think I might have enough samples at beer fest to = one beer so I don't feel left out and leave it at that. And thank you Brook I will have a great time .

                I respectfully disagree.

Beer has hops/rice/grains in it, several different varities of alcohol & liquores have sugar and all sorts of stuff. There IS more than just alcohol in most everything and because of that it can and does toss you out of ketosis. That doesn't take into account all the calories - and while we don't count calories, calories absolutely do count and drinking is a super easy way to suck down a ton of them and not really have a clue of how many you did consume. THAT leads to weight gain - or a stall if you're lucky. This is why Dr. A recommended staying with clear liquors or the occasional glass of wine.

Just know what you're looking at and then do what you gotta do.

And like I said, have a great time!
