  • I Could Scream--sugar in the sneakiest places!

    Warning: Rant in progress!

I could scream! I have learned to be a devout label & ingredients list reader, because I know the food industry lies on the front of the label.

Granted, I bought this BBQ sauce at LEAST 18 months ago, and never opened it, because I had three bottles of BellyCheer Sugar Free Grillin' Sauce that I loved and I don't use processed foods very often (stay mainly with whole foods). I had read the label on that one, and not one illegal ingredient. Way back when, someone said the Kraft Carb Well was legal, so when I saw it on sale for less than a dollar, I grabbed one, without reading the label. Good thing I didn't pay much for it, or I'd be even madder than I am right now!

Well, since today is Labor Day, and a National Grilling Day, I am making BBQ baby back ribs. Since I'm almost out of the BellyCheer sauce, I dug the Kraft Carb Well out of the back of the pantry--then read the ingredients list. Not only is sugar the fourth ingredient (one of the 4 is water), it has molasses and modified food starch!

Not only is this not legal on Induction, which I am back on for 14 days, it's NEVER legal on Atkins! In the trash it goes!

Mad Sunny! (Better known as mostly cloudy)

That stinks! But now you know I had to throw out my favorite seasoning for the same reason, sugar.

Sunny, that sucks, but at least you know. I was slow losing for a YEAR because the UNSWEETENED iced tea I was drinking in the cafeteria had HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP in it. What the heck is up with that??

There is NO reason to add stuff like that in...unless they are tring to get an addiction going...aahahahaha here I go thinking conspiracy theories....

It ticks me off too. What really bugs me is that a lot of things with sugar in them do not need sugar! Like, I've seen canned soups with high fructose corn syrup!

I am convinced that all this sneeky corn syrup (which is the devil, BTW), is one of the reasons people have gotten to fat.

It's very VERY frustrating when manufacturers are allowed to play with the nutritional labels that are supposed to be put on packages for our benefit. When I'm teaching people how to read labels I can't stress enough to go to the ingredient list because 0 trans fats doesn't mean 0...it means .4-0 and same goes with carbs.

How can we fight the obesity epidemic when manufacturers blatantly lie on both the front labels and the nutritional information? Not everyone thinks to look for "hydrogenated" ingredients when the Trans Fat says 0 (I've seen MANY big brand names list 0 trans fat but have hydrogenated oils in the ingredient list) nor do they think of looking for corn syrup when the label says sugar free and 0g of sugar. Though I don't know in which universe Corn Syrup ISN'T sugar...but I guess we need to leave that to the makers of various "sugar free" whipped dessert toppings to explain. (Perhaps it has been imported from Bizarro land?)

Don't even get me started on "whole wheat" bread that turns out to be only 40% whole wheat lol...

My brother worked for Kraft for 20 years in the product development department, so I actually know the political/economic reasons behind putting sugar in everything, even where it doesn't belong. It makes me furious!

The government is more worried about us having to support third world countries that produce sugar (cane & beets) if we stop importing so much sugar, than the rising rates of obesity & diabetes in this country. Food manufacturers and restaurants get tax breaks/incentives based on how much sugar they buy. This was also behind trying to get sugar added to the USDA food pyramid as a necessary nutrient, with a MDR! Thank goodness that didn't fly! They want to keep us addicted.

With this way of thinking, the food producers, third world countries, drug companies and lobbyists win and the public at large loses.

Re: I Could Scream--sugar in the sneakiest places!

I'm amazed at how many products you wouldn't think have sugar (or corn syrup or starch or all the other anti-Atkins products in it) but do.

I went to buy peanuts. PEANUTS! I picked up a jar of Planters Dry Roasted Peanuts. I didn't think it was even necessary to read the ingredients label. What else could possibly be in a jar of peanuts other than peanuts? Well, sugar, corn starch, corn syrup, and a bunch of other stuff. Come on! Just throw some damned peanuts in a jar and sell 'em! Luckily, someone else has the common sense to do that and I bought those instead.

The same thing has happened while trying to buy broths, sausage, ham, and so on and so forth. Very frustrating.
