  • When is it a stall; when is it a mess up?

I have been doing Atkins for two and half months (that's 10 weeks?). I have lost 25 lbs, but nothing in the last 3 weeks. I know that stalls are common to this WOE. I just wonder how I would know the difference btw a stall and messing up? I am eating the exact same things now as I did at the beginning (actually, I cheated a bit at the beginning and now I don't).

It occurs to me that 2 lbs/week is a great weight loss. Maybe I should look at total loss/time to determine if I am on track?

    Thanks

It's very common for there to be a pause in weight loss after the first few weeks of losing. We call this PISS (!): Post Induction Stall Syndrome. It seems your body needs to take stock of the changes happening and make sure you're serious about losing weight! The loss usually starts up again after a while.

You need to have paused at least a month, with no big dietary changes, cheats or reduction to your daily activity levels for a pause in weight loss to be called a stall.

If, after a while your weight loss doesn't pick up, try posting a menu or two in the Review my Menu forum. Sometimes, it's only something small that needs tweaking.

Also... you could consider moving to OWL, which often jump starts weight loss again. Don't be afraid of OWL... you still lose (some people even lose more, particularly on rung 1) and the extra food choices are very welcome.

Hang in there... you'll be fine, I'm sure.

Have you checked your BMR to make sure you are not in starvation mode? ( happened to me even though i thought I was eating enough!) you can calculate your BMR online ( just google BMR and a calculator should come up) if you eat under this number consistently your body will hang onto fat etc as it will think you are in a famine!!!

I also experienced a big pause right at about the stage you are at ...so I Moved into OWL And things started moving again ! Hang in there and things will start moving again soon . As Sally said - sometimes your body needs to pause to take a breather!

I'd say hit OWL too, i lost more on OWL than on induction, my body loves veggie carbs!

I'd also suggest not just using the scale to see how well you are doing but also taking your measurments. It may very well be that you are losing inches during that time even though your weight is steady.

Dr. Atkins defines a weight loss plateau as 4 consecutive weeks without loss of inches or pounds. So if the scale is stuck, but you are losing inches off your body, you're not in a "stall".

What great information, thank you all soooo much. I NEVER would have thought of OWL as a place to jump start my wieght loss. I have always been terrified of moving out of induction. Of course, not doing the rung thing is what caused me to fall off the wagon on my last go round (5 years ago). This time I figured I would stick with Induction for the months and months I needed to lose the weight and then start up the rungs to Maintenence. You all have given me a whole new perspective.

I just broke out of a month long stall, no lbs or inches lost. how did I do it? I moved up a rung. grains no less. I lost 3 lbs that next week. Who would have thought eating a piece of sugar free whole grain wheat bread would encourage my body to lose more weight!!?? I only had it once this week though because it's still unreal. I should be having another piece soon. it's all one big experiment. You learn what your body can have and what it can't. I thought I'd never be able to eat bread! But learning portion control by appetite suppression in induction, I don't gorge on the stuff.

The last sentence in Chapter 13 of the book is this:
People with high metabolic resistance can benefit from doing Induction longer than two weeks because it gives them time to correct the metabolic imblances they may have developed over time.
So if you don't have a high metabolic resistance to weight loss as defined by the charts in Chapter 13 and/or the other causes of metabolic resistance as defined in Chapter 20, staying on Induction may not be the best thing for you.

We've had countless ADBBers who have stayed on Induction longer than they should have and hit months long plateaus that are only broken when they move onto OWL. If you look at their initial losses, they had low to average metabolic resistance according to the charts. I don't know why that happens, but it's as though if you keep your carbs artificially lower than your CCLL for an extended period of time, your body becomes efficient at using those few carbs and breaksdown only enough fat to sustain its energy requirements. But that's only a theory. However, the experience of this board has been if you keep your carbs below your CCLL for an extended period of time, the diet won't "work" for you.
