  • USDA database: carbs by difference?

This may have been asked in the past, but I couldn't find anything on it. The USDA database lists "carbs by difference" in the breakdown. Is that the same as net carbs, or do we still subtract the fibre to get the net carbs?

(The reason I'm asking is that I just tried jicama for the first time and LOVE it! But I don't want to go nuts on it if it's super high in carbs.)

    Thanks.

I can't answer your question about the database, but according to the Atkins carb counter, a half cup of jicama has 5.7g of carbs and 2.5 net carbs.

I tried it but it was too sweet for me. I did like the crunch.

I eat jicama all the time with very few problems. It may stall my weight loss slightly, but I was getting really sick of snacking on hard boiled eggs and string cheese. Jicama is just so light and refreshing. It's also the perfect substitute for apples in chicken curry salad. Yum.

Ya, see that's the problem. Different sources say different things. Sometimes it's really hard to know for sure. When it comes to really low carb things, it's not a big deal. But the higher carb ones could be too high, and I have no idea.

Well, jicama is on the induction list. I would not worry then too much about the exact carb count. I really highly doubt if anyone has gotten fat from eating a cup of jicama. Just eat the foods on the list, in the amount prescribed, and you should not have any problems.
