I am on Lexapro 10 mg daily. I have recently read that this medication may impede my weight loss. I have been plateaued for 1-1/2 weeks now. I am considering weaning myself off of this medication. Has anybody had any experience with this situation. If so, please tell me how you weaned yourself off or dealt with the problem.

    Thanks in advance!

Where are you on your Atkins journey?

Many people report having a 'hesitation' in weightloss 3-4 weeks after starting Atkins, so if you are at that stage it might be nothing to do with your medication.

How are your measurements? sometimes we lose inches even when we are not losing weight.

As to weaning yourself off medications, I would suggest discussing this with your doctor. If it IS causing your weightloss to slow maybe there is a similar pill that would not affect weightloss that could be prescribed
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

      Re: metabolic resistance

I have been on Lexapro 20mg for 3 years now and am 50 years old.
It has done wonders for me as far as menopause is concerned.
I have not had a problem loosing weight while on Lexapro and Atkins.
I know everyone's metabolism is different.

I was on an antidepressant in the past that did make me crave sugar.
My Dr. added a little Wellbutrin and that took care of the cravings and
helped me loose while on antidepressants. It worked wonders!

So if you feel like you still need to be on the antidepressant
but feel like it is stalling your weight loss...you might want to talk
with your Dr. about adding some Wellbutrin or other options.

Just a thought from someone who has been there!

I think you should talk to your doctor about weaning off any medication rather than doing it yourself.

By the way, Dr. Atkins defined a weight loss plateau as 4 consecutive weeks without loss of pounds or inches. So if you are losing inches, you aren't in a plateau eventhough the scale isn't moving.

          Re: metabolic resistance

My doctor weened me of Lexapro, it took about 6 months to complete. I was on 20mg then 15, then 10 then 5. It took a while but I reduced the level when it felt right by cutting pills in half and then having my doc reduce the mgs. If your still having depression, don't even think of getting off it. Speak to your doctor first. I am relieved to be off it, i don't need it know. I hope you have the same luck.

            Re: metabolic resistance

I take many different medications that all can affect weight loss.I have managed to still lose weight - albeit quite slowly. I dont have the option of not being on this medication so i just go with the flow. I go off the medication would mean i wil feel awful so I just hang in there and try to be patient.

              Re: metabolic resistance

Thank you so much for all of your replies. Great information. What is this plateau 4 consecutive weeks after beginning Atkins? How long does it last and what can you do about it? I have been on Atkins for 5 weeks. I also have Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP). But it has never bothered me before. I am wondering since I have lost 15 lbs in a month if it has something to do with giving me heart flutters lately? Any ideas? Thanks so much in advance!

                Re: metabolic resistance

Yup, sounds like the post-induction stall, or, more commonly, post-induction "hesitation and hovering".

It can last anywhere from 2 weeks to 5 weeks. You are probably losing inches even though the scale isn't registering.

Nothing to do about it except to keep doing exactly what you are doing. Exercise, drink a ton of water, eat right. And be patient - your body needs to adjust to dropping 18 lbs in 4 weeks! That's a TON!

As for the Lexapro, I wouldn't worry about it. If you were able to drop 18 lbs, it's not preventing you from losing.

                Scale: SW:235 CW:193
                GW:150

Tape Measure: I've lost 42.5 inches as of 3/15/2008

                Mini goals:
                215 - met 9/10/07
                205 - met 10/17/07
                195 - met 2/20/08
                180

                I survived a two-month stall!

If you're having heart flutters, at least call and tell your doctor about it. Since you lost weight the dosage of whatever medicine you're taking might need to be adjusted.

                    Re: metabolic resistance

Are you taking a multi Vitamin? This is essential as all the water we drink can wash away a lot of minerals etc . This may be why you are having heart flutters. Just a thought . I certainly felt light headed and a bit wonky until i got some multivitamins and a postassium/ magnesium supplement
The post induction stall occurs because your body is probably taking stock of all the new stuff it is going through. I got things moving again by moving on into OWL!
