  • Weight fluctuations all over the place!

    Hi everyone

I'm currently on OWL and in the middle of a month-long stay in LA at a hotel. I made sure to bring my scale with me because I was so nervous about gaining weight. I'm really struggling and feeling disheartened because I feel like I'm doing my best in a difficult situation but my weight is fluctuating all over the place! I gain or lose a pound or so a day, and after just a small cheat yesteday of sugar-free Jello (in lieu of dinner as lunch was a huge beef salad), I gain 1.2lb! I've never ever cheated with illegal stuff and just feel a bit like a good student whose teacher is too strict on her Sorry, feeling sorry for myself.
I know the rules, know what to cut back on etc but can anyone give me advice on how to make it past the plateau without being hungry all the time when you're away from your kitchen? I've even been exercising every day at the hotel gym, yesterday burning 450 calories on the elliptical machine.
I think the problem is also that I don't have a lot to get off, so that makes it harder. And I often feel energyless and that tends to make me snack on something legal that I should leave out like nuts or decaff coffee with heavy cream. But we need these little treats rright, or life would be such a bore... Sorry for this long diatribe, just getting it off my chest. Thanks for listening!!

There is nothing wrong with being hungry - it just means you should eat! Maybe you could take a trip to the local supermarket to buy a few healthful snacks for the mini-fridge? Think veggie platters, heavy cream for your coffee if the hotel carries only half-and-half, low-salt and nitrate-free deli meats and cheeses (i.e., Boar's Head), and some berries.

I travel very frequently, and while I make the way I eat a 100% non-negotiable mindset, it is the last thing I think about unless I am actually sitting down at mealtime. Indeed the most difficult is the beginning, but it really does get easier - you'll get the hang of it!

      Hi
Thanks for the reply. I have done that, which is why I find it so frustrating that my weight jumps around all the time. Is this normal? I know it can drive you insane to weight every day but because I'm eating out all the time at the moment I feel I need to keep tight control. And it's driving me insane to see the results!

It's perfectly normal for the scale to fluctuate on a daily basis. Happens all the time. It's not fat, it's water/fluid.

Go with your lowest registered weight as your official weight, and anything over that is not correct.
        Start date: 7/29/2007

        Scale: SW:235 CW:193
        GW:150

Tape Measure: I've lost 42.5 inches as of 3/15/2008

        Mini goals:
        215 - met 9/10/07
        205 - met 10/17/07
        195 - met 2/20/08
        180

        I survived a two-month stall!

The scale can vary day to day and hour to hour. Therefore, what are your measurements doing? REmember, Dr. Atkins said that the loss of inches was a more reliable indicator of losing fat than the scale because losing inches represents the fat emptying from your cells.

Stick to your OWL plan and continue exercising as you are doing. And dump the scale----if you retain a pound of water, that scale will show that you "gained" one pound. And since it's fat that we are trying to lose, water weight gains don't mean a darned thing!

Thanks, I'll try measuring myself. That's one thing I've never done, believe it or not, even though I knew I should. Might have to wean myself off the scale slowly as a bit obsessed by it...
            Thanks for all the advice!

              Hi Aya

When you excercise as you are doing your muscles can retain water to repair themselves. This could account or the slight fluctuations you are having. I weigh myself almost every morning and it is always up and down . I dont worry mysel over it as when I look in the mirror I can see that I am definately changing shape. I Have sat at the same weight for up to 8 weeks quite a few times! Hang in there you are doing fine

Re: Weight fluctuations all over the place!

Okay, morning panic! I thought maybe the scale had gone back down from yesterday's 1.2 gain but, shock, horror! It was up another 1.8!! Is that even humanly possible? I realise it must be water retention to a certain extent - I think it may be TOM's approach but so much? I guess it's back to induction for a few days for me... And up the exercise. This puts me basically back to where I started, and I've never eaten anything other than low-carb treats since starting 2 months ago.
I've been having nuts and decaf coffee at Starbucks with heavy cream. Guess that has to stop. Other than that, I'm really not doing anything wrong.
Does anyone else retain water in such a big way?

Re: Weight fluctuations all over the place!

Yep, I do. As soon as I hit a low weight, I can expect to go up between 1 and 6 lbs for the next few days. Then it starts to taper down, up again, zigzagging, and finally I'll drop another bit.

Yes! I can fluctuate up and down about 2 -3 pounds on any given day. Its just the way our bodies work so relax and dont stress too much about it!

Today down 3lb after yesterday. So I officially have learned my lesson about being a slave to the scale.
