  • Difference between Canned and Real Pumpkin

Does anyone know if there is a difference in carbs from canned to real pumpkin? I bought a real pumpkin yesterday (the jack o lantern kind) and it tastes really sweet compared to canned pumpkin. I just want to make sure that I don't go over in carbs if its more carby than canned.

    Thanks!
    Happy Monday

Make sure it is only 100% pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling which is sugar. Read the label ingredients.

    Hope this helps!

Re: Difference between Canned and Real Pumpkin

I bought canned pumpkin yesterday and there was a different carb count between two brands for the same amount, so I think pumpkin variety can make a difference. I have some home-grown pumpkins too, but I, also, have no idea of their carb count.

Thanks for the responses but my question is whether real pumpkin (not from a can) has a higher carb count than canned pumpkin. I cooked real pumpkin yesterday (the jack o lantern kind) and it's really sweet. I really don't want to mess up! Thanks again!

No it doesn't have a higher carb content. You will, however, need to look up the nutritional values for pumpkin in order to get a more accurate carb count than using what's on a can label.

It depends on the type too...I got a Spanish Pumpkin (Calabaza) which tastes MUCH sweeter than the traditional pie pumpkin...yet according to the University of Florida, the carb count for 1 cup of the calabaza is about 4 total carbs LESS than the traditional pumpkin (fresh or canned) carb count according to fitday.

Fitday generally just uses the canned pumpkin carb count.
