  • Have I lost enough weight....

    Hi all,

I started Atkins in June and I did ok loosing about 8 kilos or around 17/16 pounds. I did not really do follow it very strictly in July for various reasons and many cheating days but i still lost 2 kilos which is nearly 5 pounds. Since around august 10th I have lost 10 kilos (20 something pounds) by being very strict of course and doing some exercise etc. I need to loose at least another 40-50 pounds to get to my target weight and I am worried that I am not loosing enough. Should I be loosing more. Have any of you lost more than 10 kilos in a month or month and a half? What should I expect? Am I on target or loosing too slowly?

Re: Have I lost enough weight....

You've lost 46lbs in 4 months and you're concerned about slow weight loss?!!!

C'mon!! Reality check!! You didn't put the weight on over night and it's not going to come off that way either. You've done an AMAZING job already - even with cheating and not staying totally on plan.

You are NOT losing slowly. You want to do better? Exercise more, stay totally on plan, and drink lots and lots of water. It'll move as fast as it moves, but there are some things you can do to ensure you're maximizing your results - so do them!

    Continued success to you!

Thank you very much for your delightful words. I guess the problem is that I just want to be thin thin thin and not feel like crying all the time when I think about how much I weigh still. I know I look much better now than before I just cannot help wanting to be thin. I know that may not make much sense to you all but I just have this image in my mind and I want to be like that again. I did put the weight on very quickly but it was over six months that I went up that much because of a change of lifestyle, moving to a new country and not moving at all but eating a lot. I have done well but perhaps i could do better. Again, I just want to be thin.....

Umm, dpaca - Maybe you didn't take the time to look at the animated picture diary in my signature or look at my stats?? You started 8lbs heavier than I did and our goal weights are the same.

I know exactly what you mean, but I've also been at this long enough to know that it just don't happen like that. Frankly, the "instant gratification" mindset is part of what got you (and most every one else here) in trouble in the first place.

If you want to be thin and healthy, you have to put the time and the work into it. It just is what it is. It's not going to happen fast AND healthy. You can do this the healthy way (and lets face it, you weren't real committed to that to begin with as evidenced by your cheats ), or you can do it fast - and that doesn't = healthy.

If you're in this for the long haul- a life style change- then the speed with which it happens won't be your focus. You can't force the weight to come off fast (well, you can, but it ain't healthy!!), but you can do everything in your power to ensure it happens as fast as it can healthily and improve your health dramatically while you're at it.

You're in good company here. You are not alone in the way you feel here at all. Honestly.

        Drink your water.
        Stay on plan.
        Exercise.
        Take your supplements.

Those are things you have ultimate control over. The rest will come.

        Hang in there.

dpaca, you really need to pop into this thread:

One of my favorite things apple said:

And the best thing about losing the 20 pounds via Atkins way of eating and exercise, Atkins is a life style not a race. So, no matter how fast or slow I lose weight, I'm happy to be a ....be it in weight, inches, or old habits.
Now THAT'S an Atkineer to admire!

Yes I agree Brook, and I guess I was just having one of those paranoiac days where one thinks that everyone else can loose weight much faster than themselves. One question! How long did it take you to loose your first 50 pounds and did u cheat (since some people suggest this to speed up weight loss once you start back on Atkins) during this period. Thanks a lot.

Re: Have I lost enough weight....

My first 50lbs were gone in almost 9 months and I did not cheat - not one time. I exercised regularly (5-6 times a week for a minimum of 35 minutes, but usually closer to 45-50 minutes). - So yeah....LOL I'm a little hard pressed to feel horrible for you for losing in 4 months what it took me the better part of twice as long to do without cheating and working out regularly! LOL!!!!

Cheating to speed up weight loss is like telling someone to shoot themselves in the foot because it'll help them run a marathon faster. Oyyy.

You get to have bad days! It's okay. That's what we're here for. We're here to hold your hand when the going gets rough as much as we're here to kick ya in the butt when ya need it too. We're the best of both worlds, don't ya know?!

Well, the people that suggest this are not expert if that is what you are getting at. I am not saying that I wish to do this. However, I have heard people say that if you cheat at the end of the week, like say on Sunday you loose more weight for the rest of the week.

That concerns me greatly. And it is definitely untrue, but in time you will see that.

Congrats on your success so far, may it continue.

Re: Have I lost enough weight....

dpaca- those are people who have little to no understanding of carb cycling and the principals of the program. Those are people who will look for any way and any excuse to get away with doing something they know they shouldn't be doing and then trying to make themselves feel better by suckering other people into their ridiculousness with them.

As I said above. Telling someone to cheat to lose more weight is like telling someone to shoot themselves in the foot because it'll help them run a marathon faster. It just doesn't stand to reason or make any sense at all.

Doing things like that messes with your metabolism, and more importantly messes with your mind. Slippery slopes at best and self destructive at worst.

Carb cycling DOES work, but it's a very specific program and there are very specific ways to carb up - it's not cheating - it's part of that plan - and that plan ain't Atkins.

It's good I mention this, since I did start getting worried that I was not really giving myself the best chance by following the book. I guess I am happy with my progress and thanks to you all for your support. I am going to continue for another two weeks on Induction and then start OWL. If anyone has any further suggestions please keep me posted I really appreciate all your feedback.
