  • Proper weight?

Personally I have a hard time putting faith in any of these charts that say what your "ideal weight" is supposed to be. I put them in the same catagory in my brain as the wankers who decide to make jean sizes smaller.
If some model on the runway weighs 120lbs at 5'10" and thats considered normal, I'll be setting a goal for myself that will NEVER be achievable unless I go starve myself, then i'll just get frustrated because my darn DOT hasnt moved the halfinch on the chart to where the allmighty god of bmi's says it should be.
I know all of us are shaped and built different with different bone sizes and body types, but if you can't recall -being- your target weight, how are you supposed to know when to be proud of yourself and when to be frustrated?
Last time I did atkins I lost 32 lbs and was down to 180lbs. I'm between 5'9 and 5'10.5 depending what convenient store i'm leaving (ok I TOTALLY stole that from ron white), but i'm weirdly built. one gene has seen fit to give me ample chest and hips, the other gene has made me weirdly tall and athletic (not that you could tell right now, but I played soccer for 10 years)
at 180 I was in a loose 14, and at the time felt I want to lose 15 more lbs, then see how I felt. right now i'd kill santa to get into 14s lol, but who's to say whats a healthy weight for who? i suppose its just a model to try to base it off, but I hate judging my progress on that damn little dot on fitday telling me i'm obese. how is this thing telling me i'm obese when I can't even shop in lane bryant because everything there is too -big-? Maybe its body fat, but how the heck does it know my body fat ratio? a guess?
Its all just annoying me right now.

    Re: Proper weight?

I would go by the BMI as it shows you if your weight is healthy and the range for a healthy weight isn't too small, so you have the choices.
170 looks right to me at your height and when you've reached that, you can still decide if that's how you feel good or if a few more pounds have to go.
I have my goal set at where I always wanted to be but never was, so it could be that I'll never be able to reach it.
Once I get to the weight I had 7 years ago (when I felt sexy muha) I'll see if I find it necessary to lose a bit more or if that actually feels good to me.
So, for health reasons I'd follow the BMI to make sure I am at least in the healthy range but once that point is reached, I'd let my feeling decide if that's enough.
Date to reach goal: I don't care, as long as it happens :P

It's hard to know exactly what your weight should be. I plan on just seeing where I am when I feel I look good and I feel good. If you exercise more, you can get by with a higher weight. I'm with you, the BMI is just a guesstimate, not terribly accurate.

      Good luck and happy losing!

        Re: Proper weight?

i think it depends how many times youe lost and gained too. I came across an old entry on my fitday waybackwhen talking about how a certain pair of jeans were falling off me, then I gained weight, then when I lost again, i still couldnt wear them. I was all rearranged and losing in different places faster than others than the first time.
too bad weight loss isnt linear it'd be so much easier.

I know logically that with my build (and my boobs lol) 170 is probably ok. I dont think i'll be classified as "thin" if you just saw me on the street having never seen me before, but its in the healthy range. smack in the -middle- of my healthy range for my weight is about 155. when I -was- 180 I could see that, but looking at my pictures from then im going ".... where would I lose that from?" I think im torn between not wanting to set it at 170, get there, then go "10 more lbs" over and over and get all obsessive (a trait I tend to have) and setting it at 155 and seeing how long I have to go, and if I dont get to THAT number, feeling like I failed, cause I know any loss isnt a failure.

hmph. my brains being difficult tonight i think its time for bed.

Ive never been the weight i am now, let alone my goal weight, i have no clue if i can get there, but i think its doable, dont worry too much about your weight goal... how about have a clothes size goal? that should be more doable.

lol nope emma no clue! I'd say 12 because I dont think i'd ever fit into anything else because of the way i'm built. I can barely remember wearing 12s way back when so I know at least that I -did- at some point lol. I was almost in 12s when I was at 180, and I still wanted to lose 15/20lbs after that. We'll see. I remember last time it took almost 20lbs to go down my first size

If you have wide hips and a small waist you can buy Jennifer Lopez brands. I'm sure they'd have something to fit you. She has a similar shape. I'm sure you can fit in a 12, but you have to find a pant shape and brand that fits you.

Have you asked your doctor what he/she thinks would be an ideal or good weight for you?

I never thought I'd be wearing size 8 after wearing 18, 20 and 22 for half of my life. But I do wear a size 8 and I am actually lowering my goal size to a 6. My original goal size was a 10 because anything smaller seemed alien. Well, it's not. I have 20 lbs to lose and if I lose all 20 I may be in a size 4. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.

                  Re: Proper weight?

What I did was look at a BMI chart. It gives a range of "normal" weights for a particular height. In my case, the normal weight range is 145 pounds to 109 pounds; my height is 5'4". But I quickly changed that weight goal into a size goal. See, I look at it like this....what's the big deal if I weigh 140 pounds or 110 pounds, if I can fit into a size 8 at both weights?

                      Re: Proper weight?

makes sense lot2late. Its more about how you look than the number youre at when you look that way. disco i totally know what you mean by it seeming alien lol. I'm going "huh, 8s and 10s? theres no way!" But who knows, i'm so used to looking at my bum the way it is, when it shrinks who knows what i'll fit into.
I remember when I got down to 180 going to Old Navy (we all know how their jeans run small) and squeezed myself into a 12! It was beyond uncomfortable and I could never wear them in public, but I did get them over my thighs and hips, which was just insane to me after leaning toward 18s.

                        Re: Proper weight?

Believe me...it does depend how you are built!
                        I am 5'10 and weigh 150 and I wear a size 12
and will never wear 8 or 10.

People say I am thin at 150 but I have weighed as much
as 170 and was miserable there. I think your weight should
be where you are most comfortable at and a number you can
maintain and not stress daily over. Life is too short to set your
weight goals so low you do not enjoy eating for the sake of
how you are percieved. Just my thoughts.

                          I agree Pie!
                          Random story time!
A while back I had a close friend pass away and I was very sad. It was tax free weekend, so my dad decided to cheer me up he'd take me shopping. I grabbed 2 pairs of pants, jeans and some khakis, but I didnt try them on because we had groceries in the truck and they were already melting. They were my size (supposedly) so I didnt worry about it.
                          Get home?
Neither of them fit! I mean I cant even get them over my HIPS dont fit.
Its so frustrating. My jeans that are falling off me right now are the same size as these new pants. I got them from Target, I guess they run their clothes small? But I can get the same size from walmart and they fit ok. Its stuff like this that makes it frustrating to even try to aim toward a size sometimes. So now even though they are the same size as my current pants, those are my new skinny jeans lol, and they're just sitting around waiting for me to fit into them!

I think it's a "know it when you see it" type thing and while it would be nice to have an exact goal to strive for, you really don't need one. Based on the charts, my ideal weight is around 125 lbs. (I'm 5'5"). However, I'm very small boned and I know I'm pudgy at 125 (although I'd be thrilled to be there right now), and just right at 112. I'm a size 6 at 112. I have friends who are 5'5" who wear a size 6 at 150 and look fabulous. Go figure.
