  • New Cholesterol # - 6 months

I started Atkins on 3/19/07 - My weight was 223lbs. When I started I went to my Dr. to get chol.#'s. I was concerned about this WOE and although manyyyyy articles were written on how it was safe and can lower cholesterol, I was very concerned since my #'s are high.
    Here are the numbers:

    ------------3/19/07----- 9/19/07
    Weight-------223----------183
    Total # ----- 310 --------- 265
    HDL --------- 56----------- 69
    LDL ---------190 ----------180
    Try's-------- 294----------- 87

Not bad... Try's were VERY good. I would have liked to seen the LDL lower but it's a start.
I did however have one thing go up.
    Blood Sugar! - It was 99 - Now 110
That really surprises me since I do NOT cheat at all. The only sugar I get is from Splenda and vegetables. Diabetes does run in my family, but I am surprised at this #. Especially since I am HYPOGLYCEMIA (low sugar).
But because of the improved chol#'s, I will stay on this WOE. Will check them again in 6 months.

Yippee.... congrats on your improved Cholesterol numbers!! Did you ask the doctor how come the blood sugar numbers are up? Sounds odd to me, after having taken out sugar and carbs. Could this be a mistake, do you think?

I haven't talked to the Dr. yet. I got the #'s from the nurse over the phone. Today, I took my own sugar test (at home) and it registered 116! Obviously all tests have been conducted while fasting for 10-12 hours.
I'm baffled and a little concerned about this.

Well... I don't know much about blood sugar values, except that usually on Atkins BS numbers improve dramatically. When was your level 99? A long time before you started Atkins, or just recently? If it was a while ago, your BS number might have gone up, beyond the latest level, between the time of your first test and your recent (after starting Atkins) test.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I have, will be around soon and will maybe be able to shed some light on it.

Do pls let us know what the doctor's explanation is when you get it.

I started Atkins on 3/19/07. I went to the Dr. two weeks later to get a baseline so I could compare down the road. Blood sugar was 99 then.
Yesterday, I took my own #'s and it was 115!
This morning it was 100... I don't get it.

If you did the test two weeks after starting Atkins, your BS might already have fallen during those two weeks, from a higher value. You need to compare it to whatever it was before you started this WOE. BS is bound to fluctuate quite a bit according to what you eat, so I wouldn't stress these numbers. Rather, ask your doctor if you should be concerned. I'm sure he'll put your mind at rest.

              Keep us posted, pls.

Buddyjay, Do you test after meals? Try testing approx. two hours after you have consumed a meal. That gives you a better picture of how food effects you.
Did they do an A1C? That again will give you a better overall of just where you stand.
