Okay here is my question... The holidays are coming. One each month starting This month... (halloween). Although I will not be allowing the candy into my house on halloween I will be having thanksgiving dinner here. I've kinda givin myself permission to have a carb blow out on those days. I just realize I'll have to go back on the induction a day or two later. Same for Christmas. I've heard that when you do things like this after being on the diet for a while it makes you kind of sick... Is this true?? What food choices can I make so that I will not feel sick after these holidays? thanks for all your help.

Re: What do we do during the Holidays????
let me just say that you will probably get so sick afterwards. Everyone has that overstuffed feeling on Holidays but yours will be magnified. I bloated real bad and had stomach pains just from introducing the whole wheat bread on rung 9 a few months ago. It was a shock to my system. Really think about this ok? have turkey topped with au jus, have cole slaw or brocolli slaw. A nice dinner side salad. Some baked squash topped with good stuff. Quiches with left over Christmas ham. Green bean casserole. PLAN PLAN PLAN and you can keep legal. TRY IT.30/F/5'6"

Re: What do we do during the Holidays????
The holidays are easy! There's so much good food to cook. If you cheat, you'll suffer. You'll be hurting your body and causing all sorts of cravings that will be difficult to get rid of. It may take you longer to get into ketosis again, and the weight may come off slower.

Re: What do we do during the Holidays????
I "went off" for Christmas day two years ago. I got to start Christmas with wanting to vomit from the sugar high, to crashing half-way through the day and being so tired and brain-fuzzed I couldn't enjoy the holiday.
Not a good idea...definetely not worth it.

And just to throw my 2 cents in....this is a way of eating for life without detours into old eating habits. You have to watch out for those detours of eating habits, they can lead you down a deep gorge of missery.
Keep the faith that you CAN make it through the holidays, plan ahead, focus on your goals, and remember your worth the effort
Cheers!

Re: What do we do during the Holidays????
I'm sure it's not what you were hoping to hear, but everyone here is right.
Odds are if you binge on carb laden foods you're gonna feel like crap. Tired, bloated, sick. It's really over rated.
Now is the time for you to start surfing the recipe database, low carb recipe sites, and going through posts from 10 months ago (you can do that in the advanced search feature - example "Thanksgiving menu" , and you can expand the time line the search is in or narrow it down). Start trying a couple new recipes between now and the holidays to see if they're gonna work for you and my bet is you can put on a spread that'll rival anything you've done before. I know I can!

I also plan on cheating on Thanksgiving and Christmas. I know my body well enough to know how it'll react. Get to know yhour own body then decide. I do allot of baking and cooking at the holidays. To me it's not a big deal. I just get back on it. I won't usually come on here to talk about a cheat cause these folks love to pull a guilt trip on you but just wanted to respond to you.

Re: What do we do during the Holidays????
Oh dear that time of year when conversations turn to "planned cheats".
IMHO they really arent worth it. But I guess everyone needs to experience it for them selves to fully understand why not.
I am not going to preach either way as I will no doubt get accused of being the low carb police.
Good luck whatever you choose to do.

Re: What do we do during the Holidays????
There are so many recipe's on Linda's Low Carb site as well as others that I wont be missing anything. If I do go over my carb count, you can bet it wont be by much. I will have alot of vegetable dishes and yes a few low carb desserts, so what will I miss? Sure, I might miss the stuffed, miserable, gassy, sleepy feeling, but hey, Im worth it, lol.MiniGoal 1-240

Re: What do we do during the Holidays????
Things don't taste the same as before. I'll be honest with you, it's so not worth it.
Yesterday I cheated. I had three bites of a brownie and I was ready to hurl. In part because I'm allergic to chocolate, but mainly because I hadn't had that much sugar or chocolate in such a long time. Did it taste good? Not really. Did I want more than three bites? Nope. Do I regret cheating? Absolutely. I was going so strong and then I messed up all that hard work for three lousy awful tasting bites of brownie. Can I get back on plan? Yes, I can but it's difficult. Either because you think "hey, it was easy last time let's do it again" or simply because your body had a hard time adjusting.
You think you know you're body, but you'll be amazed at the changes that happen when you're no longer eating processed foods.
I'm going to stay low-carb during the holidays. If you go up the rungs you can have a nice green leaf salad with balsamic vinegar, little bit of olive oil, walnuts, and a few grapes...Mmm, so good! The turkey is totally legal, ham, you can make all sorts of recipes from Linda's Low-carb site as well. Try not to feel like you're missing out on anything. The only thing you're missing out on is reaching goal.
And look at just how much weight you've already lost! Is it really worth a piece of pie?

Re: What do we do during the Holidays????
I read in the book to plan on eating like you are in the maintence stage for holidays and/or special events. The holiday meals are not a big deal to me as I can eat legal and still enjoy (except I will miss stuffing a whole lot, but I have decided not to indulge). My hubby however, will be going to maintence style eating. He has asked his mother to make legal veggies, whole wheat stuffing, and to try to do a xanythm gum gravy, and a legal pumpkin pie. He is ok with gaining a bit, but feels by making wise decisions he can enjoy his eating and go right back to OWL after. I am sure he will go right back because I will have never left so the meals at home will be legal and since we eat at his parents we never have any leftovers at home.Female

Re: What do we do during the Holidays????
Can anyone tell me in the DANDR where it says one may enjoy the holidays as if they were in Induction? I want to read that section very carefully. Ive just posted a thread asking for everyone's favorite low carb recipe so that I can plan early. I always cook tons of stuff for Thanksgiving. I like everyone to have alot of selection on that day.MiniGoal 1-240

Re: What do we do during the Holidays????
To be fair, rather than pulling a guilt trip, I think people are simply expressing their concern that a member might feel dreadful after a carb blowout, and worse still, fall off the programme.Originally posted by yma832I also plan on cheating on Thanksgiving and Christmas. We all are responsible for the choices we make.... it's not a question of guilt or not. Actually, I think it's very cool that people care enough to want to let others know, from their experience, what the possible/probable consequences of some decisions might be.
Then, it's down to the member to make up their own mind. Before and after:
