  • The Annual Medical

Now that I am over 55 the Bristish Army requires an annual medical of me.

In a week I will be 58, so I have to have a medical in the next ten days or so.

Today I weigh 204lb - I declare 203lb in my signature - last medical I was 202lb. So, vanity reqires I weigh in the same or less than last year. No treats and lots of cycling!

I have published these data before, but here they are again - my weight over the last 30 years as recorded on my army medical records.

I joined up in 1977, lost a few pounds in my first two years and from then on it was ever upward until I reached the mid 50s and 260lb - that was far too much even for my 6ft 3in.

Enter Dr Atkins and a sypathetic Medical Officer.

Close to 60lb lost and new weight maintained.

Thank you Dr Atkins. He may have added years of active living to my life, but his programme has allowed me to earn the pay of a senior colonel for an extra 5 years. It is paying for my children to get through University. Just think of the pension!

I was told a few days ago that I am to be posted home for my last 18 months service - that pleases me. I will go to a nice part of the country, and of course, my acceptabilty in the new appointment is contingent on my medical grading of FE - "Forward Everywhere" - not that I expect to be going anywhere, but it means that a Commander will accept me in spite of my great age!

Details of where I am going are still secret!

    Here is the weight record:

    Year Kg lb

    77 93 205

    79 90 198

    84 98 216

    87 103 227

    89 105 231

    92 101 222

    95 106.5 235

    99 110 245

    01 105 231

    04 118 260

    06 91.5 202lb

    Today 204lb

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Atkins works in the short and long term.
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
    he said, 'Don't count calories.'

                    Re: The Annual Medical

                    Yes, I passed the medical.

My records show that I was 93Kg last year and weigh 93 Kg this year (my records have me a Kilo lighter than that last year, but who am I to argue with the doctors!)

The doctor also noticed my weight on joining the army in 1977 - yes, you've got it 93 Kg. It was the years in the middle that became the problem!

The surprise was a resting pulse of 55 - I have seen 58 before, but never 55. It must be cycling up all the hils in these parts!

And Betty, I thought you were my inspiration, not the other way round! Me, running? Never, never , NEVER!
