  • Carbs early in the day, or more spaced out?

    Hi all!

Maybe this is a super idiotic question, but do you consume the majority of your carbs earlier in the day, or try to space them out?
I have noticed that when I consume more carbs at lunchtime and less at dinner, I tend to see results, and I feel a little less "draggy" at night. Thoughts?

Hi Colleen - love your username!

From everything I've read it's best to spread your carbs out across your meals for the day. I know it has to do with how it affects your bloodsugar, but it also helps to keep you in fat-burning mode consistently. I've read that in the book and around here (on the site).

Do you have a copy of the 2002 edition Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution?

    Good luck to you!

Re: Carbs early in the day, or more spaced out?

Somebody wrote a book "No white at night" or something like that. There may be something to it. I notice that when I eat mostly fat late in the day, the next day I may not get hungry at all. And also when I eat some extra carbs late (football game snack) I am frequently a little hungry the next morning.

I think the idea of the book was that eating carbs late does not give your body a chance to burn them up.

If it works for you - take advantage of it.

        Thanks for your responses!

Wendy - I totally see what you're saying - I guess part of me knew it, but wanted to see if there were any other views on it I do have the book - ahem, I mean "bible". It's been my pal for 5+ years
I also see Hudsons pov - I'm going to try out my theory and see how it works for me..

Thanks again for your responses, I appreciate it!

Re: Carbs early in the day, or more spaced out?

In general, I do better by having my larger meals early in the day, with the carbs being proportionally larger at breakfast and lunch. I go light at dinner on all three (carbs/fat/protein). This is totally opposite to the way I ate at nearly 300 pounds. I have to get creative to get a lot of veggie carbs at breakfast, but I now enjoy all kinds of them in my morning egg creations. It's hard to tell what veggie will turn up in my scrambled eggs!

Please post your findings Colleen after you've experimented a bit - I'm always looking for any advantage I can find!

Recently on another thread I read that we should strive to keep the ratios consistent at each meal - instead of just trying to get them in balance by the end of the day. For instance, on induction your goal is 65% of calories from Fat, 30% from Protein and 5% from Carbohydrates (those being Veggie Carbs as much as possible). I don't remember seeing that in the book, but of course it makes sense!

Hey Sunny - I work with a man that every day brings in last night's dinner w/ two fried eggs on top. He heats it up for a mid-morning snack. It could be LASAGNE and he still serves it up like that! And he's skinny too. ARGH! Anyway, I guess eggs go with everything! That's a great tip for keeping breakfast interesting & the fridge cleaned out too!

For those of you that eat light on the carbs at night, what do you mainly eat? just meat? Sounds like an interesting concept.

I tend to keep my salad veggies for dinner. They are lighter on carbs. I can still add my extra olive oil to the dressing to keep my fat high. I have a very small portion of meat at dinner and have fish at dinner a lot.

Re: Carbs early in the day, or more spaced out?

I would say the 'trick' is to not spike your blood sugar. Some folks seem to tolerate a larger carb load at one or two meals and others need to keep things pretty evenly spaced. Eating lower glycemic carbs overall and especially later (if you are eating carbs later) in the day is helpful. And being sure to eat carbs with some protein and fat is important, as those help to offset the effect the carbs have on blood sugar.

Although I try to space evenly, I haven't ever noticed a huge problem if I end up eating higher at some meals as long as my daily total was in line.

Leafy salad is a great dinner choice! I have also had steamed green beans or broccoli or stir fried cabbage or zucchini later in the day. Those foods are all pretty easy on the carb budget.
