  • Questions: Dr. Oz vs Dr. Atkins

I apologize in advance if this is covered in the books....(mine should be arriving any day!)...but I'm one of those somewhat obsessive compulsive types and I like to know my boundaries so that I can make sure I'm not crossing them.

I don't want to pitch one Dr. against another but I want to see if these rules apply in the Atkins world:

Dr. Oz has said that to find your ideal daily water intake, you should divide your body weight by half and that is the number of ounces to consume. Is that how we're doing it?

Second, Dr. Oz (I watch a lot of Oprah!) has said that your ideal Protein intake is calculated by taking your body weight and multiply it by .37 to give you the number of protein grams to take in each day. Is this a yes while in the house of Dr. Atkins?

AND finally (don't you love new peeps?) - Dr. Oz said that you should consume 25 grams of fiber daily, period, no matter what you weigh (most Americans only have 10). Is this also an Atkins supported goal?

I know all of this is no doubt in my books...but to hold me over until they get here, I'd appreciate it.

    Thank you in advance!

well, normally we do 64 oz of water plus another 8 oz for each 25 lbs you have to lose.

I'm not certain on the protein amount but am certain that sounds about right. And fiber never hurt anyone!

That's one way to do it. there are several ways to calculate daily fluid requirement.

But the minimum daily water requirement is 64 fluid ounces for an average adult.

Second, Dr. Oz (I watch a lot of Oprah!) has said that your ideal Protein intake is calculated by taking your body weight and multiply it by .37 to give you the number of protein grams to take in each day. Is this a yes while in the house of Dr. Atkins?
Depends. The RDI for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram body weight. To convert pounds to kilograms, divide the pounds by 2.2. So if you weigh 100 pounds, you weigh about 45 kg.

Oz's rule comes out to roughly the RDI (0.8 gram/kilogram body weight). Dr. Atkins, on the other hand, didn't follow that---In Atkins Diabetes REvolution, he says to keep the protein at around 30% of your daily caloric intake. I've never sat down and figured out how many grams/kilogram that would be.

AND finally (don't you love new peeps?) - Dr. Oz said that you should consume 25 grams of fiber daily, period, no matter what you weigh (most Americans only have 10). Is this also an Atkins supported goal?
Dr. Atkins sid we should have fiber in our diet. That is why during Induction we eat at least 5 USDA style servings of vegetables daily and when we move to the other phases of the diet, we eat more of those servings. That said, you need to be smart when you pick your vegetables. For example, if you eat 3 cups of lettuce, that's only about 3 grams of fiber. However, if you pick the higher fiber veggies like jicama, artichokes, pumpkin, etc. you'll get pretty close to that 25 grams. It might be surprizing but some of the Induction vegetables have more fiber per serving than a serving of oatmeal or whole wheat bread. Plus Dr. Atkins said we may have a daily fiber supplement.

I found that when I moved to OWL Phase and was able to eat an additional 5 net carbs of vegetables, my fiber grams increased. Again, you just have to be smart about your choice of vegetables.
