Re: I wanna slap people sometimes!

Yea, sometimes people need to be b-slapped into reality. Why on earth would a complete stranger lecture another complete stranger about their food intake...it baffels me. Pick just about any home in Beverly Hills and knock on a door and lecture them about their many prescriptions, I'm sure they will listen intently. Good for you.

Yeah people can be so ignorant. Now when people ask me about my eating habits, I explain the basic principles and how good it makes you feel, but I don't bother to tell them it's Atkins, because I know as soon as I do, they will be full of criticism. It's funny though, if I don't mention the 'A' word they all congratulate me for making a healthier choice!

It's very funny - if you tell them you are cutting out white flour and white sugar, they applaud you. If you tell them that it's Akins, suddenly you are risking your life, and likely your mortal soul by the sound of some of these "well-wishers".

Re: I wanna slap people sometimes!

I used to be one of those people that told folks about the dangers of Atkins. I have since learned the error of my ways, but I don't think if someone had called me an ******* I would have been inclined to change my opinion. I agree she had no right to lecture you, and I would have wanted to slap her too, but I don't typically curse at strangers.

Re: I wanna slap people sometimes!

I got the same response from work when I first started doing Atkins. Then the weight started coming off and they saw me eating vegetables alot. Most of them responded by saying "I thought you couldnt have vegetables on Atkins", and now they ask me how to do my WOL. I always tell them first to get the DANDR and read it and offer to share my menu's with them. Im not quite sure why there was such a need to bash Dr. Atkins before the UNBIASED studies came in. I think because many scientists, physicians, nutritionist have taken the USDA guidelines without ever questioning it. Who knows. I just know I feel great and people who know me can see it, they comment daily on it.

A new staff recently transfered to the place where I work. She found out I was on a diet and next thing I know she's trying to sell me some herbal water stuff for like $300 a month! She was like, Oh yeah I've been doing this for a couple of months and I've lost like 10 pounds. So I reply, Oh that's good. I've been following the Atkin's diet and lost about 100 in 6 months. Funny how I never heard her bring up the topic again.

Re: I wanna slap people sometimes!

People are just so poorly educated about Atkins that they actually dont know what it is, to most its just the bacon and eggs diet.

Rather than swear at someone i would of just said, "here, have this book, its a great read and you'll learn its not what you think it is."

I mean really, you can pick them up from a charity shop for a £1, i'd rather spend that to re-educate someone i dont know who will more than likely read the book and pass info on to their friends.

Sorry but i cant "congratulate" you for your rude response.

Re: I wanna slap people sometimes!

The woman on the bus is probably also the type of woman that walks up to a pregnant woman that she doesn't know and touches her belly!! She doesn't know personal boundaries!

Before I knew the whole story about the Atkins way of life, I was a doubter, too. Especially on the heels of Dr. Atkins' death. However, as they, say, knowing is half the battle.

My best friend struggles with her weight and daily she complains about it. Every other week or so, she comes up with some scheme or another to lose the weight, but only gains more. I told her I was starting Atkins and her reply was "I flatly reject Atkins and everything about it". Meanwhile, she's gained what I've lost (and more) and she's growing more and more frustrated - and hungry all the time. Guess what book she's getting for Christmas??

I bet you didn't! She likely wanted to go hide in a corner!

Great job to the OP for telling the person off!

ROFL! I wasn't looking for congratulations! And second that's your opinion. In MY opinion SHE was rude. And I didn't swear AT her at all. But I do congratulate you for giving away your books to strangers and having to purchase another one for yourself, it is a very kind gesture. However, I highly doubt that this woman on the bus wouldn't read a page of it. Guess you had to have been there to understand.

Re: I wanna slap people sometimes!

It never ceases to amaze me how people who have never even read the book can go off on the Atkins program! Most people only hear what the media have portrayed the Atkins program to be, that is, Atkins = Induction Phase. How the media have been able to perpetrate this misconception for so long is beyond me, but there you have it. People have their opinions, regardless of whether they are based in ignorance or fact.

Now, I wouldn't have had the nerve to say what you did to that woman, but that's just my personality. Sounds like one of those "you had to have been there, she really needed to be put in her place" moments.

                            Yes the differences are interesting...

In the USA a verbal attack is just as unacceptable as a physical one is. (I won't discuss my opinion of such hyper political correctness) BUT her response of "That's your opinion and you know what they say about opinions, they're just like assholes, everybody has them!" does not constitute swearing at that rude woman's attack.. She did not call her a name , mearly pointed out an anatomical truth... we do all have one. What it is, is telling her to mind her own business. That saying is a common one in the USA... we all know it means... "Thanks for your opinion, I don't agree with you and will thank you to mind your own business"... so you see there really are cultural differences. We're often more brash but then when we speak of a toad in a hole... we're talking about Amphibians homes not a lunch special.

I don't know why, but I am fascinated by the things people will say to those of us on Atkins. The experiences people have had with friends, family, even the general public amazes me. It's perhaps the same kind of attractions as watching an episode of Cops or Jerry Springer where you see people acting so out of the norm -like a car crash that you cannot look away from. What makes people so angry/extreme about this WOE? We are all living proof that it works, and we're not keeling over from gallstones and heart attacks. Is it jealousy? Why do they behave that way?
