  • This exercise is really helping me change my body

I started weight training 2x a week, heavy lifting, about 4 months ago when first starting Atkins. At 198 lbs, I was averaging 2000-2100 calories a day and losing 1lb a week. Now I weigh 179 and am eating 2250 calories a day and still losing 1lb a week.

The only thing I can attribute the continued steady weight loss while increasing my calories is due to muscle gained from WT resulting in an increase in metabolism. With WT, inches off my arms, waist, bust, hips and thighs have melted, too. I am down 2 sizes and 19lbs so far.

In addition to the weight loss and slimmer body, my osteoarthritis is MUCH less painful, I feel stronger, and I am not as jiggly.

WT is really working for me. If you haven't considered this exercise before ladies, maybe give it a try!

I always feel so good after working out. I just got done with tae bo now I'm going to sit and watch my favorite tuesday night program which I t-vo'd and work with my weights. they're only 3 lbs but when I use them with my targeted exercises. they work great for me. Maybe next month I'll graduate to 5 lbs. Hehehehe

Weight training is great for the metabolism! I also train 3x per week. It has so many benefits - cardio (which you wouldn't think), firming/toning and helping your bones!

I started out small in June and have been able to increase weights along the way, but not too fast.

Keep it up Kelly and thanks for bringing this up!

There is nothing like weight/resistance training for reshaping your body.

            Definitely.

If you're not doing it, you should be!

You're correct about that Kelly. I forget which source was the first to prove this, but the jist of it was, that a muscular body will burn roughly 500 extra calories a day. You have to give and take that number for the amount of muscle you have, but you get the idea.

Here's basically what I'm doing to average a 2-4lb loss each week:
                • Free Weights M, W, F 40 minutes
                • Cardio T, Th, S 90 minutes
                • Average Intake=1300-1400 Average Expenditure=3200
                • Low sodium (attempting - it's really tricky!)
                • Grazing Approach
                • Use of vitamins and whey protein isolate

Man! How do you fit that many calories in? Can you share a typical menu? I'm just fighting as hard as I can to get up to 1600 per day............

I'll never forget the time I started weight training about 5 years ago. Even though I was already at my goal weight, in a very short time, I dropped about two pounds and a full dress size. There is something to be said for that!

I truly feel that diet is at least 80% to credit when it comes to one's physique - good or bad - but cardio and especially resistance training provides some serious icing on that cake!

Evermind, I will be happy to share Monday's menu which is a typical menu when I lift that day. I eat a meal before I lift in the am and a meal right after I lift so that makes 4 meals a day.

6am 1 cup cottage cheese, 1 large tomato, 1 chicken thigh with skin

                      10:30 am same as above

lunch-6 oz pork loin, 1 1/2 cup cauliflower with 3 tbs of sour creme, 2 cups romaine lettuce with 1 1/2 tbs of homemade roquefort dressing and a few kidney beans sprinkled on top

dinner-2 chicken thighs with skin, 2 cups salad with roquefort dressing, 1 1/2 green beans with couple pats of butter, 1 glass red wine.

I am on rung 6, by the way. 55% fat, 7% carbs (40 net), 34% protein (180g), 4% alchohol, 2207kcal. The personal trainer told me to eat 1g per lb of weight on those days I lift for muscle repair).

I second iyamamaschke - no woman will ever bulk up lifting reasonable weights. It takes a lot of calculated and dedicated work, over a long period of time, even by most men (that don't use growth hormones).

Thanks Kelly! I guess it's the meat. I don't really eat much - makes me sort of gag.

Ah, well! I'm just about to start the alcohol rung. Maybe that will add some calories.
