Re: Who has the facts on diet soda?

I did Atkins very successfully in 2003-04. I drank diet soda throughout (caffeine free) and I don't think it affected my weight loss, and if it did I was satisfied with my rate of loss so it didn't matter. This time I've decided to cut out the diet soda, not because it stalls my weight loss but because I've come to believe that it is not good for me and I'd been drinking too much of it.

I read something once that said soda isn't much more than a bunch of chemicals, but if I recall, the writer was an anti-everything zealot and I've come to realize that anyone who's that viamently opposed (i.e. to the point of anger) isn't necesarily giving you the facts and the research. Best to avoid those types.

I've never believed soda is good for you, but it's the carbonation that I'm really curious about. Someone said that's the real problem with it but I can't remember why. The dentist said it was evil because it screws up the ph balance in your mouth making your teeth vulnerable to decay much more quickly. And of course, it strips calcium from your body blah blah blah. It's not good. I'll try to dig up some actual evidence to back that up.

      • Free Weights M, W, F 40 minutes
      • Cardio T, Th, S 90 minutes
      • Average Intake=1300-1400 Average Expenditure=3200
      • Low sodium (attempting - it's really tricky!)
      • Grazing Approach
      • Use of vitamins and whey protein isolate

I used to be a very heavy soda drinker and so when deciding to take on the Atkins WOL I too wondered and experimented with it. I can not drink syrupy sodas ........ Diet Colas, rootbeer orange ect ......... for one they stall me and also they make me crave sweets. I can however drink the clear Sodas sold at Walmart with no issues whatsoever ......... they tast delicious andhave no caffiene no sodium no sugar .......... I drink probably one 20 ounce one a day and also they are super affordable compared to regular brand name sodas.

I've never been much of a soda drinker. I prefer iced tea (plain, no sugar, sweetener or lemon) and water. Thankfully, my daughter refuses to drink sodas (too "fizzy" for her), so we just don't keep them around the house. Aspartame gives me a headache, too.

My husband likes carbonated beverages, but he drinks Crystal Geyser sparkling mineral water (I buy 2 cases at Trader Joe's and it lasts him about a month). They have an essence (flavor) such as lemon, lime, orange, berry, but no sweetness. This might be a way to go for those of you who crave carbonation.

Re: Who has the facts on diet soda?

I drink Diet Coke - if I can find it - the one with Splenda. I still lose with it - but I also drink water constantly! I found a bottle with a straw for some reason will make me keep drinking it. If it's one of those sport tops - forget it I won't touch it.

I am trying to switch to coffee in the morning for the kick and then switch to water for the rest of the day.
