Re: Oh boy. I received this article on the diet

Wow, this artical sounds like crap, glad I missed it. When "well meaning" folk try to pick at me or sabotage my diet I am usually mean to them. I find if they realize sending me this stuff honks me off, they quit sending it/telling me about it. So, I could not offer any good advice on dealing with the "well intended" emails. I think other folks have offered good advice. Have a great day!

OK, I just wanted to make sure. Some things around here get said once and become untrue gospel. Those are fabulous numbers, I'm jealous, the lowest mine ever got was 88 (down from 335).

Re: Oh boy. I received this article on the diet

Whenever anti-Atkins studies pop up, there are two sites that I go to: Regina Wilshire's Weight of the Evidence, and Dr. Mike Eades' Protein Power, This time, it is Eades who picks the study apart.

        http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/2...blood-vessels/

For those who can't be bothered to read, here are the cliff notes (emphasis mine):

        1. The study was not a peer reviewed study. All the press had to go on was a 15 minute presentation with a few sound bites.

To begin with, this isn’t really a scientific study published in a peer-reviewed journal. It was a brief presentation (about 15 minutes including questions) made at the annual scientific meeting of the American Heart Association in Orlando, Florida a couple of days ago... These are lectures about work in progress or small or preliminary studies that have been done but haven’t been published. The ’study’ in question is an oral poster presentation.

        ...

These giant meetings are open to the press, members of which get these huge programs just as do the scientific attendees. The folks with press passes go through these programs looking for lectures that they think will give them a headline. They don’t care how insignificant the talk is, who is giving it, whether it’s a poster or an oral poster presentation - they are looking for headlines. And what better headline than that there is a problem with low-carb diets or even better, the Atkins diet itself.

        ...

I would imagine that of the 30 or 40 people (if that many) who attended this talk a large number had press passes. These media types stay after and talk to the speaker to get a few quotes, then head off to the press room, dash off a few hundred words, send it to their service, and head back off for another headline-grabbing talk (or the bar).
        2. While the study claims that it studied Atkins, the actual implementation has too many carbs to be even considered to be low carb.

Let’s assume that they were average weight and required 24 kcal per day to maintain their average weight. While these subjects were on the Atkins diet part of the study the abstract tells us that they were consuming 50 percent of their calories as fat... Fifty percent of 2400 calories is 1200 calories... and 1200 calories were other than fat. Since other than fat means carbs and protein, that means that the other 1200 calories were divided between these two macronutrients. If we assume that 20 percent of calories were protein that calculates out to about 120 grams of protein per day, which is a fair amount and probably more than they actually got. But let’s assume 20 percent. That leaves 30 percent of calories as carbohydrate. Thirty percent of 2400 kcal comes out to 720 calories as carb. And since a gram of carb is 4 calories, dividing it out gives us 720/4 or 180 grams of carb per day. Does that sound like the Atkins diet to you?
        So basically,...

It was a flawed study. I already linked to this post above, but it discusses the same issues, i.e., blaming a lab finding on saturated fat when the diet is full of carbs. What do we care that a low-carb diet showed an increase in inflammation and worsening endothelial function when what was tested wasn’t really a low-carb diet?

In summary: no complete study, no peer review and no Atkins diet. Yet it made the news big time.
Edit: I suggest to those of you who go an read Dr. Eades post that you click on the "digg it" to make it more visible to others who may have read the news report.

BTW, whenever I read a news report of an anti-Atkins study, this is how I usually respond...

I don't even pay attention to these articles anymore. Next week someone will come out and say something different. All I know is Atkins makes me feel great, lose weight, and I have no issues with my health stats!

Re: Oh boy. I received this article on the diet

you know, in a way they may even be right IF someone was staying at induction levels of eating for a very long time and thats why I just dont understand all the people on here who stay on extended induction for months or god knows how long.
i do believe that if you eat as high fat as you do in the beginning, it'll come back to bite you in the butt at one point BUT if we (except for this who have a low carb tolerance) follow the diet as it is intended and do owl, add carbs back and so on, we will at one point live healthy and eat balanced.
i mean we all know, more good carbs should lead to less fat as you dont need that anymore to satisfy you.
i'll admit, right now, being on owl and all, my fat % is still relatively high since i just cant seem to reach the amount of carbs i should be eating by now but i'm kinda lazy at the moment, feeling comfy with how and what i eat and the weightloss isnt going like i want it to either.
so, if these studies were long term and had followed people that followed the plan to the letter and the results were the same, i'd damn well be worried but since they are not and i know where dr. atkins wanted us to end up when we are in maintenance, i am not worried at all.
Date to reach goal: I don't care, as long as it happens :P

Ironically, I just had a little cold baked ham, with mayo on it, and that exact image crossed my mind. It was sooo good!

I am about to leave work for the day, but maybe someone here might drop a note to MSNBC and let them know the, what, hundreds of people on this board who have been on the plan for years, and have seen their cholesterol improve? I think hundreds, for years should carry a bit more weight than 6, for a month?
