I'm sure this question has been asked before, but why does Atkin's say that sugar alcohols can be omitted from your daily carb count completely? Although they are incompletely absorbed, the glycemic index of many of them is as high as alot of fruits, and they do have calories. Won't your body burn those calories before it burns fat?

Re: sugar alcohols
Doesn't look like anyone wants to touch this one. The few things I know about sugar alcohols....different people absorb different amounts of calories and carbs from each of them....people react the least to erythritol.... some folks count half the SAs in their carb counts, some don't need to *shrug* I can't imagine the SA being any worse that the maltodextrin in Splenda, but you generally find SAs in larger quantities.

Re: sugar alcohols
Thanks guys. From what I've read, it sounds to me like eating sugar alcohols should only be a problem (as far as knocking you out of ketosis and causing weight gain goes) if you eat them excessively. They would probabley have the same effect as eating too much lean protein. I can live with the little bit of indigestion some of them give me because they taste as good as the real thing.
