  • Help!! I ate 12oz of mixed nuts in 24 hrs

hi everyone. i am a 23 yr old carb addict....so this is why i chose atkin's. I just finished induction. I lost only 13 lbs. but was relatively happy. I didn't cheat, I drank my water, I didn't excercise. I was going to continue the induction for another two weeks but then decided to to do OWL for mor variety so that I wouldn't give up.

Well we went shopping yestaurday and I bought two containers of planters mixed nuts(12.5oz) 2 for $5 plus the (6oz) macadamian lovers. ok so I got home and I didn't eat any because it was the last day of induction. and I work late on the computer so at about 2am only three hour after induction I started my binge. by this afternoon today I'd finished the macadamian lovers can (6oz) and right NOW there is only half a can of the (12.5oz) mixed nuts left. That is 12 oz of mixed nuts in 24hr!!!Help I got on the scale and I gained 5 lbs back the day after induction.

I'm on the computer now and the nuts are in the cabinet. I don't know if anyone cares but I'm worried I will fail atkins b/c I'm still addicted to food. Maybe I should take nuts out and the advantage bars. These 2 things I can eat till no end while probably gaining weight!!!!! Please help me someone

I too went nuts with the Nuts -- try buying them in single serve portions and only buy them one at a time - and then only for a treat. They are very hard to cut back because they are so yummy but i found they stalled me . I have now cut them out until I get to goal which is very close for me now ( YIPPEEE)

I am so so so very proud that you are very close to your goal that is so awesome!!! I can't wait for my day. Your advice makes so much sense. I shouldn't sabatage myself by having so many nuts on hand..they are very tempting..even before atkins they were.
I think I should take the, out and maybe just some in a salad!!

      Have a good weekend, bye.

Re: Help!! I ate 12oz of mixed nuts in 24 hrs

Jessica--it's clear that nuts are a trigger food for you. What's a trigger food? A food that causes your body to go haywire, causes cravings, causes a binge. You'll find that many foods, although they're legal for Atkins, are NOT legal for your individual body!

Nuts aren't allowed until Rung 3 of OWL. So throw them away! You won't be needing them for a long time, if ever. And if/when you do add nuts back in, try ONE type of nut at a time. Try almonds, or walnuts, or cashews, or pecans, NOT all of them at once.

There might be a time when nuts will be OK for you...but it seems that the carb monster is still alive in your blood! Be patient, follow the phases as directed.

Another question...were you eating Atkins bars? Those have ingredients that are NOT legal until higher rungs of OWL and should not be eaten until that time. They also cause horrible cravings.

Re: Help!! I ate 12oz of mixed nuts in 24 hrs

Jessica, Julie has given you some good advice. I have found that nuts are hard for me to control, too, so I mostly stay away from them. You may have seen in the Atkins book that those bars are induction friendly, but many people here have problems with them -- stalls or cravings.

Don't worry -- the 5 pounds might not be "real" weight. Some of it could be water you are retaining from the salty nuts. So, in the meantime, go STRAIGHT back to your plan... don't say "well, I've already blown it so I might as well eat more nuts" (or whatever else you've been wanting. Drink LOTS of water to flush out all those carbs and sodium, and maybe pick today (or tomorrow) to start exercising -- and get rid of some extra calories. Even a walk around the block with help.

You did the right thing by coming here. Next time, just come BEFORE the nuts... Hang in there -- don't give up!

Re: Help!! I ate 12oz of mixed nuts in 24 hrs

I have been doing Atkins for over two years, have lost 120 pounds, but I can't eat just a few nuts or just a little peanut butter or I bring those nasty carb monsters right back to life! I go months without 'cheating' or eating off MY plan (I don't eat after dinner or after 7:00 p.m.), but you put peanut butter in my house and there's no stoping me. It's not really a good idea to eat the salted nuts to begin with. It's much better to eat natural almonds, walnuts or pecans. Anyway--the first rung of OWL is 5 grams of veggie carbs. You have a while before you get to nuts. Nuts are a trigger food for many, many of us.

            Sunny!
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Re: Help!! I ate 12oz of mixed nuts in 24 hrs

I find it almost impossible to just eat a few nuts - if I am eating just nuts.

So I look on them strictly as an ingredient, not a food. I keep flaked almonds to toast a few and use them in a chicken curry, or sprinkled over sauted brussel sprouts. Ground almonds to use occasionally for baking or as a crust on fish (really good on salmon). Roughly round pecans make a great crust on pork. A few walnuts in a salad with a cheesy dressing is yum.

But I NEVER eat just nuts - one leads to a hundred!!!

                    Jessica

There is a big positive here. You have learned about NUTS! I follow the advice to only but one single serving at a time. Eat that one and then buy another. And I mostly eat them as a meal replacement. I have found that they have tremendous staying power for me. I have eaten a single serving (don't know ounces but 380 calories) and made it an entire day. Not a great idea but better than 6 donuts and a pizza. So nuts are my friend.

However it took me about 2 and a half of my 3 plus years on Atkins to figure all this out. I once got the discount 5 lb can of nuts to save some money. That turned into a 4 day supply!!

So nuts are good and Almonds and Walnuts are especially nutritous. BUT they are dangerous. You can do it.

First of all, congrats on your weight loss. Don't depreciate the 13 pounds by saying you "lost only 13 pounds". 13 pounds is a tremendous amount of weight. If you don't believe it, go to the supermarket and lift a 10 pound bag of potatoes and 3 pound bag of onions.

Secondly, don't buy anything that isn't allowed during your phase of the diet. Nuts aren't introduced until after Rung 1. So don't sabotage yourself by buying items that you cannot eat at this moment.

Thirdly, you now know you have an issue with portion control. So take your OWL slowly. Introduce the items one at a time and watch for any cravings or the other blood sugar instability symptoms. Recognizing these little cues will help you with your weight loss and weight maintenance.

This is axactly what killed my Atkins WOE the first time around. I swear nuts are like a "gateway drug" and an almost guaranteed ticket back to the carbs... At least for me it was. I started with a few handfuls of mixed nuts to curb my carb cravings, then it was a spoon full of peanut butter and than I was gone... Never again for me anyway. I might as well just get a box of Krispy Kremes and be done with it as soon as eat any nuts...

Whoa!! Don't you dare use that "K-K" term around me Those are dirty words here.

Sorry the nuts got you - best not to even have them in the house at all in the induction phase. Look forward to when you can have some as a reward for making it to that rung, but in the mean time you can benefit by memorizing the Carbs, fiber and associated quantities for the different kinds of nuts.
Nuts are not all created equal, so you will need to be ready to know when to stop once you do get there. It probably will be easier to stay on track if you start only with 1 or 2 varieties of the "safest" kinds- almonds & macadamias- instead of mixed nuts there may be other nuts & seeds just as good that are more obscure such as you find at Whole Foods.

Another tip for when you reach the nuts/seeds rung is to portion them into one ounce bags (I use my sealer gadget for this).
Also many people (me!!) find unroasted unsalted nuts are much easier to keep portion control with!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
