  • Is too much red meat possible?

I don't mean I'm eating a bucket of beef every time I eat beef, but rather I notice that I prefer it over most other pure protein sources (ie: turkey, chicken, pork, etc.) and eat it almost every day. Is that bad? I feel like I can get sick of the other stuff, but beef never lets me down. I love burgers and steak and pot roast... I am embarrassed to even ask as I'm sure this question has been answered in the past, but I cannot find anything about it. I wondered if the SOURCE of pure protein doesn't matter as long as your ratios are good (60/35/5 - I'm still on induction)?

LOL. If there's one thing that i still 'gorge" on, it's slow roasted pork butt.
Maybe the attraction to a particular meat is more than just taste though. Steak/beef is a great source of iron....are you low? Pork is a great source of thiamin. I make a point of eating a variety, because I know my body needs the different vitamins and minerals in different food, but if I were rich (ha!) my days would be surf and turf every day.....filet mignon and lobster.....but I bet I'd still crave pork!

I go with the "variety" of diet too. I think it's important to have lots of different foods (meats too). However, if you love beef, then I wouldn't stint yourself. Just make sure you eat to satisify your appetite only, not beyond.

Re: Is too much red meat possible?

i am embracing this atkins WOL but i was always concerned about a huge consumption of red meat and eggs. there is nothing wrong with either food but...well i used to run cross counrty in high school and i remember someone saying to me that you should limit your intake of eggs to about 4/week. now whether that actually true or not, i really don't know......and i would suppose many people here far exceed that number on a weekly basis.

i have been mixing it up though. i have lots of vegetables and shrimp. lots of chicken.........tuna fish, salmon, tilapia......thanks to mom and dad. they have fish 2/3x per week and always give me some if i should stop by. i do have red meat, but generally once a week......but that me?!

everyone, i suppose, has a slightly diffierent metabolism and......you know, different things work well for different people.

        be well

Re: Is too much red meat possible?

cgdat136 - that's probably what I was trying to ask - about the whole "recommendations" by the ADA for consumption of red meat. Every other diet you look at says to limit your intake of it (due to cholesterol), but Atkins never says anything negative about it, so I guess I am yet again falling victim to the brainwashing of America by the diet industry. I remember from the book the only reason he says to limit things like lobster and shrimp is because they are higher in CARBS than some of the other protein choices listed - and he says nothing at all about red meat restrictions.

Thanks Chicklady and Sallyseachange - there are probably a lot of good reasons to keep a varied menu, nutrient variety being one. I need to branch out a little bit more with my choices, there's no doubt. I wish I liked fish more, and the only way I like shrimp is cocktail style with, of course, cocktail sauce, which is out of the question. And veggies have never been something I've eaten with gusto, so that's something I'm having to learn to do.

Re: Is too much red meat possible?

I'm weary of eating too much red meat. I just don't think it's healthy for me.
In this past week I've only eaten steak once; otherwise, we eat chicken or pork. On Sundays, normally, we make a pot roast thing and we have it for a few meals.

Chris~I once read an article on eggs. Doctors tell you to limit your intake of eggs because they are so rich in nutrients. One egg has half the nutrients you need for a week. I wish I would have saved that article. I eat an egg almost daily, because it's the easiest and fastest breakfast meal.

yo know what i have been doing....

in the mornings......i get out a pan and saute cut up peices of red pepper, onions, celery......then i even put in little frozen shrimp and cut up maybe 2 sausages........then to take it even one step further, after simmering for 15 minutes or so.....add a little shredded cheddar or sour cream. totally adheres to the atkins plan. very easy to make, doesnt create a lot of dishes or mess. and for a guy to say that.........lol

Re: Is too much red meat possible?

I jump around quite a bit from beef, chicken, pork, fish etc. but if it wasn't for a big steak once or twice (or three) times a week, I would never survive!!

How does this sound for "diet" food: Big ribeye steak, medium rare with cheddar cheese, sauteed onions/mushroom/bell pepper on top!!! Of course I go real easy on the toppings but dang it's soooo good!!

Re: Is too much red meat possible?

I have to admit i prefer beef over pork or chicken any day. Ive tried other on this WOL. But ive always like beef better, so it doesnt bother me that i eat more of it. I hear that people who do atkins taste change over time, so hopefully that will happen...

Re: Is too much red meat possible?

What is it about red meat that concerns you? If it's saturated fats and the poor fatty acid profile, you can always make a few of your red meat meals grass-fed beef, which has a much better fat profile, and IMHO tastes a lot better. We've gotten to the point where we'll only eat grain fed beef when we eat out. Cows were't made to eat a ton of grain any more than humans wereand niche market for grass fed are springing up all over the place.

Chris that sounds delish! The only thing is, watch your onion consumption. They're so yummy, but a little higher in carbs than you would think. Vidalia onions are my fave!

I was told not to eat too much beef for health reasons. But that's a really good idea....the grain fed cows~Mmmm. Sounds yummy.
