Though I always cut loose on Christmas Day, I haven't eaten off-plan on Thanksgiving since Thanksgiving 2002. Since then, I have found that it is very easy to throw together things like pumpkin pie and or peanut butter pie, low-carb fudge, mock mash, various veggie sides, have a deli-meat-and-cheese plate on hand as well as a low-glycemic fruit platter, mixed nuts ... and of course the roasted turkey breast itself. I see this day as a challenge! Not only that, it's a blast to wake up really early that morning and head downtown to do the Turkey Trot so that I feel extra entitled to enjoy all the low-carb goodies once I'm back home!

Compared to July 4th, Halloween, and fresh hot bread, Thanksgiving is easy. I eat turkey, green beans, squash (a little), deviled eggs and salad. The dressing is about the only hard part for me.

I'm in Pre-Maintenance, so my food choices have opened up. Other than the turkey and the veggies (usually steammed broccoli or green beans with my family), I will have a bit of potato and some of the ham. I'll bring a nice selection of cheese---brie, cheddar and maybe a goat cheese, so I have something to eat instead of the usual carby finger foods my relatives like to munch on.
When I was on Induction and the early part of OWL Phase, I stuck to the turkey and veggies. I did bring along a friendly sauce, like hollandaise sauce and rhubarb sauce (makes a good subsitute for cranberry sauce), and I also brought along a salad.
I was never keen on sweets like pie or cake, so I never bothered bringing a low carb version of those things.
After all this time on Atkins, the trick is to bring food you know you can definitely eat. Otherwise, you might feel left out when everyone is munching on mini egg rolls or puff pastry things and you don't have anything to eat.
We're having dinner with friends...there are 8 of us total. My menu includes:
turkey*
mashed potatoes
cauliflower bake*
string beans*
cranberry relish*
molasses cookies
french bread
chocolate cheesecake with raspberry sauce*
butternut squash puree*
fresh veggies with dip*
All the foods with an asterisk are legal for me. (Potatoes are legal for the phase of Atkins I am, but I can't eat them, as I have a food sensitivity to them.)
