  • The Good, the Bad, and Giving Thanks

    So we got through Thanksgiving.

It fell during my induction, and I feel that I must acknowledge myself for a job well done.

I brought dips and celery (didn't wait for someone else to take care of me), ate the cheese appetizers and not the chips, brought cream for our coffee so we weren't stuck with milk; made the gravy with a measured amount of cornstarch, so I could keep track of carbs.

Yes, I did have some grapes, and yes I did taste a teaspoon of stuffing while I was cooking it; yes, I made myself 2 berry daiquiris with Spenda, and the squash dish had some mango in it and a few raisins -- but no added sugars.

So here's what I'm thankful for:
    • I can have an absolutely rip-roaring fantastic time without my cousin's cheesecake and chocolate raspberry bars (even though I adore them).
    • Other folks have special dietary needs, too, and instead of my thinking of them as "suckers," as I have in years past, since I had always decided to go whole hog on the holiday and make it a "day off," I could instead decide to work with others to keep our dietary promises, and make it a special adventure. And we did!
    • I have a most extraordinary loving family -- whether I've had dessert or not.
So we've talked about giving thanks, but what about the good and the bad?

    Here goes...

May we PLEASE stop using those descriptors of ourselves, based on whether we stay with or depart from our WOE -- be it a minute, an hour, a day, a week, a month, or a year?

May we PLEASE say, instead, "I stayed on plan," or "I went off plan..." and give up the value judgments.

Value judgments, I believe, are what got us here.

Shall we keep doing and saying the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?

    Giving thanks,

    Medusa

I loved your post. I also love the idea of saying you went "off-plan" without the value judgements. Great idea

Ironically, Medusa, one of the definitions of insanity is repeating an action and expecting different results each time.

Can't agree more on the personal responsibility part. I read recently, (was it on this board?) "if you ever need a helping hand, look at the end of your arm". Favorite quote lately.

      Happy Thanksgiving.
