  • Atkins..the fountain of youth perhaps?

I wanted to pass this info along to those of you who might find it interesting. We all know that the atkins diet is a revloutionary in itself. The art of lowering carb intake and increasing protien/fat intake seems to be quite amazing. However, under the surface of what makes Atkins work is a window to to somethign even more fasinating. The ability to use Atkins as a a method to slow aging. Some of you will be saying right now that I'm nuts. Am I? Consider the following....

First lets dicuss what aging is. When you are young, your body is generating more cells than are dying off inside your body, but as you grow older, more cells begin to die off then are being created. Hence... you have natural aging. It is already a fact that people, years ago, in some parts of the world, lived to be very very old. Now, we of course hear alot about how that the average age of a person before they die is better than it was 50 years ago. Well, sure it is... here. But I'm talking 500 years ago and considering the world as a whole. This lends me to my next prt to consider....

Today's science posses the ability to take a person or animal and test them to see where there body is age wise. Not numerically, but age wise on the cellular level. We have all seen that some people look much younger than others at a given age. One could be 37 and look 50 and the other 37 and look 25. We've all seen it.... ever wonder why? I'll tell you.

There was a test conducted not so long ago and there was even a thing about it on tv. It touched on some of the key points. They took two animals( I forget what the used), but anyway, they fed them both the same kinds of food over a long period of time. the only difference was that one got fed a lot of food and the other fed just enough for it to be healthy and not starve. The one that was fed just enough... well, they they fed him just enough, but kept his body just at that point where his metabolism was slowed. Kinda like the way yours will slow by doing atkins if you dont eat often enough... slowing your weight loss. Well, after some time passed, they retested the cellular age of the animals. Guess what, the one that was eating tons showed a much older age than his actual chronological age reflected. And the one who had eaten less showed little aging at all on a cellular level. Get the idea? Note: both animals were the same chronological age when they started.

So, I realize this wont benefit you while trying to lose weight, but if you stay on Atkins long term, for life. You might consider something which might just add a few years onto your life span.

There is something inherent in humans, in case of starvation, or the bodies perception of it.... which slows our metabolism so that in the case of not enough food, we will live longer so we might insure the continuity and survival of our species.

I'll say I don't know about cellular age etc etc, but everyone here looks at least 10 years younger than their before pics when they've lost the weight. There's definitely something to it and I don't mind trying.

Taubes talks about that very study. He also mentioned a researcher studying some kind of worms. They ate some kind of fungus or something. She started feeding them glucose with their food and they all died 30% younger. Interestingly she immidiately dropped her carbohydrate consumption to a bare minimum, lost 30 lbs and saw improved bp, and other improved health markers.

Also in Taubes book, there was a study on mice. One set of the mice were allowed to overindulge and they were obese. The other set of mice were underfed and they lived 25% longer.

I just got done reading that chapter.

Fascinating stuff...even if it is hard reading.

I saw on tv a guy who purposely undereats to live longer. He eats about 800-1000 calories and ate so many cups of lettuce a day I couldn't believe it! He is very thin but basically believes by eating this way he can live much longer than not.

There are studies that show that caloric restriction does promote longevity. Unfortunately it also promotes psychological disorders like depression.

So, while restricting calories may let you live longer, it won't be much of a life.

Another thing to think about; if you cut calories by that much, you're also cutting down carbs. Is it the lower caloric intake, or the lower carb intake that promotes longevity?

I have recently bought a copy of 'Dr Atkins Age-defying Diet Revolution' which I have only dipped into so far, but he really did feel that what we eat affects how we age!

Just to add a personal observation. Around my mid-twenties, I started to grow gray hair and through the years it started to get pronounced. I did notice that after a year of Atkins, the rate of growth of gray hair seems to have slowed down.

Sounds like this subject is closely related to the studies done on animals involving ketosis and hibernation. That is also an interesting subject.

Hmmm. I don't think hibernating is an option. We don't have winter here.
