  • How Safe would Milk of Magnesia be to take evey week??

I bought some Physilium? Husk pills 2 day's ago. I've taken them 3 times a day...and still nothing.
I drink about 7 12oz glasses of water daily...still nothing, I eat salad, stringbeans, even eggplant...nothing.
I worked out. usually that works for me off atkins....still nothing.
I do eat cheese daily . and the only thing that can clear me out is Milk of mag. and I lose about 5 lbs each time I take it. Have done this since I started.

The problem is ...can my body become dependant on this over time???/

Can your body become dependent on laxatives? Yes.

Are there other precautions? Laxatives generally should be used only as a temporary measure. Prolonged, frequent or excessive use may result in bowel dependence or an imbalance in the blood minerals. Contact your physician if constipation persists or if there are any symptoms of bleeding, such as black or tarry stools or "coffee-ground" looking vomit. Milk of magnesia should not be used if nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain is present.

CAlculate how much fiber you are getting in your diet. Eggplant doesn't have much fiber. According to the USDA Nutrient Database, it has only 3.5 grams fiber per 100 grams. Same for string beans, about 3.4 grams fiber per 100 grams. Lettuce has even less. It only has about 1 gram fiber per 100 grams.

I think psyillium in the loose form is better than the capsules - plus you can add it to your food. I had a bit of a similar problem until I changed my multivitamin . The one i had contained Iron and I think this was the culprit. When i finally found one without iron the problem was resolved!

Thank you for the resoures guy's. i was surprised more people didn't have any similar problems. I guess I'm just weird. Still in search of those high fiber veggies allowed on rung 1 though. Like peas are high in fiber but not allowed. And I'm going to take cheese out of the equation and see what happens.

Re: How Safe would Milk of Magnesia be to take evey week??

I typically avoid this subject like the plague because it just makes me uncomfortable and freaks me out , but the truth is that I've always had issues. Always.

I finally had to give in and go see a doctor last week. If you're only having issues since you've started this WOE- the others suggestions will likely be helpful.

If you've always had issues and now you find they're worse, it's time to head to the doctor. I was told that it could be because of a sluggish thyroid, IBS (I always thought IBS only manifested in the form of diarrhea, but it seems that's not the case! IBS will also present as chronic constipation for some people.), and various other things- but those are the most common.

As mentioned before, you can become dependant on laxatives, so try the suggestions above and if they don't work......to the doctor with you!

Thanks you guy's for the support. I think I will see a specialist Brook. b/c I took about 1/3 of a bag of flaxseed plus lots of broccoli yestaurday and still not happy with the results. and yes there was a problem before the diet but i was pregnant. and while I'm thinking about it there might have been a slight problem before, just never a whole week's worth of a problem. Need to call right now.

Re: How Safe would Milk of Magnesia be to take evey week??

I know this is a bit late (not been able to visit much lately) just wanted to expand a bit on what not2late mentioned.
If you are not 'going' as much as you used to do before Atkins but are not uncomfortable, and not feeling you need to go but are too blocked up and it is painful to pass a movement it might just be that your body is not making as much 'waste' as it used to do before Atkins.

I had periods of about a week when I had no bm's but had no pain or bunged-up feelings, and when I did need to go it was normal with no pain or straining so I just accepted that I did not need to evacuate as often as before due to not eating as much rubbish!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
