  • Scale is inaccurate !

Ok, i have 2 digital scales of the same brand (Taylor)...but they are different models,

The older scale (2 yrs old & very used) telling me i am 2 lbs heavier.
Whats up with that, should i believe what the newer scale is saying ( 2 lbs less) ,its only a few months old.

Has this happened to any of u guys.
I weighed in the nude after i did number 2,and stepped on both of them this morning.

    Different Technologies?

Cheap digital scales look at the voltage produced from a quartz crystal that's under pressure.

More expensive digital scales, have strain resistors that measure a potential voltage.

It is more than possible for different scales to give you different weight measures. That's why we say the scales are evil and should be avoided as much as possible.

The real measure of success should be your measurements. Hopefully you took them before you began. The scale lies, but the tape measure does not.

        Re: Scale is inaccurate !

The best way to know is to weigh yourself using a doctor grade scale and compare that against the results on both of your scales.

Anyway though.. It doesn't really matter. The important thing is to use one of them and never the other. If you drop 2lbs off the old scale, then most likely you will drop 2 lbs on the new scale as well. So, the matter is really relative, no matter what your start weight is, it is more important to know how much weight you lost rather than what you precise weight is.

By the time you reach you goal weight (23 lbs later), these 2lbs become really a tiny issue can eaither move to the final Atkins phase or just take couple or more weeks on the same Atkins phase to loose two more.

        It is all relative really..

I find my 2 scales weigh differently. The only thing that matters is how my pants fit really.

I have two scales that I am testing out (one is Taylor and one is Homedics) and they weigh one pound apart. I think it's normal.

I would get rid of one scale. Everytime I get a new scale it weighs different but I just adjest my thinking to my new weight. The important thing is to use only one scale.

I agree. I bought a new one because the old one is really wonky sometimes but keeping them both and constantly checking the weights would make me even more obsessive.

Just use one scale consistently and go by that. Measurements are more reliable though.

                    Re: Scale is inaccurate !

I go by how my pants fit.

There is variation in every measurement system.

If you want to go by the scale, then do a study with both of them and determine which is more consistent. To do this, just step on and off each one about 10 times and record your weight. Don't change clothes, eat, pee, or drink between weighings. Just step on and off repeatedly and keep recording the weights. Then pick the scale that gives you the most consistent reading.

You can also check the consistency at higher weights or lower weights by doing the same trial with someone who weighs considerably more than you do and someone who weighs considerably less.

The only way to determine accuracy is to have the scale's calibration checked by an accredited lab. They have weights that are traceable to a standard. Most of us don't want to do this with our bathroom scales. And more than likely, the Dr's scales aren't calibrated either.

As you lose weight and the clothes get looser, keep a pair of too small pants handy to keep trying on. They'll go from not being able to pull up, to pulling up, but not buttoning, to buttoning but not zipping, to zipping but not being able to sit down, to fitting just right.

One scale and measurements are definately the way to go. I have weeks where the scale doesn't move, but I lose on the tape.
