  • holiday weight gain!!!

I started atkins in feb 22 of this year - and I said to myself - that I was going to stop for the holidays and get back on... I just wanted to enjoy the holidays - Italian family of mine... too many traditions/good foods I just didnt want to pass up - Plus I was feeling accomplished having lost to much weight.

Anyways - the way I have been doing the diet - A friend recommended to me that every 30 days - get off the diet for 1 days - 2 max.. and eat carbs - have pasta, cheat, do whatever.... So that after the quick cheat - your body will go into the induction shock again when you cut the carbs - and it will keep weight loss up!

It has been working for me ... though I noticed that after 2 days of cheating - I can sometimes weigh 10 pounds more than I did prior to my "cheat/reset day"

That weight I assume is just water retention - and it melts away in the first week back on so I havent been too concerned.

    Anyways -

i got off the diet on dec 22 - weighing in at 210. tonight I stepped on the scale at 238.
28 pounds in 8 days of eating?!?! That seems so absurd to me - albeit I havent been drinking water, and I have been a bit "blocked up"

Has anyone ever in life seen this type of weight gain so fast?

Im not TOO stressed about it because I know Right after our new years family dinner I will get right back on the horse, and get to losing...

Im just a bit concerned and would like to hear if anyone has ever heard anything like this -

I dont feel that ive been overeating too much? Just not really a low carb diet by anymeans, a lot of pastas, and potatoes, and christmas cookies..

    I would love some feedback.

    thanks

Everytime you binge on the carbs you are knocking yourself out of ketosis. This means every month your body is switching between burning glucose to fat for fuel. After doing this enough your losses slow down and it becomes harder to keep losing.

Have you read the book? It is really important to do induction and move into OWL so you can learn to eat this way for life. You have done really well with your losses so far so please learn how to do Atkins the right way.

        What Blue said!

If you're not doing it by the book you're not doing Atkins.

and yes that will mostly be water gain, though its a heck of a lot.

This is why its better to go off inches than pounds, the weight fluctuates naturally, add the fact that you've been cheating and not drinking water and well, there ya go.

I must agree. Although I am new to this forums, I am not new to this WOE. I have been doing this for 3 1/2 years. I slipped up the last little while and put on 10 lbs, but I am right back to induction and on my way. To self sabbatoge every 30 days would be hard on your body. It's different from a slip. I personally couldn't do it, the cravings would be too much.

Yes your body can react this way to an increase in carb in-take. And though I have done the "body shock" thing before it ended up being seriously harmful in the long run. Believe me - I am in a very 100% italian family and I did the holiday cooking this year - meatballs, gnouchi etc. and I made it through without cheating at all.

By shocking your body as much as you have, you are stressing out your organs in the way they process the foods that you take in. This is the problem with "yo-yo" dieting - it can damage your body in the long run.

Take a moment - reflect on what you are doing to yourself. You never know - if you had done Atkin's correctly from the begining you may have lost more than you have already which is still quite an amount and 1 to be proud of..... but you also might also be ready to take on some of the higher rung foods that you love.

BTW - the diet you are actually doing is called "Carbohydrate's Addict's" or something along the same line as that one. I tried it before Atkin's the 1st time around and would lose, gain it back over the weekend and lose it again.... the same 10 lbs I swear each week.....

This is a drawback of doing atkins. You won't find quite so much weight gain on other diets. Whoever said "you didn't gain it overnight so you can't expect to lose it overnight" has never done and cheated on Atkins. I can gain 10 pounds in 3 days. Believe me, I've never LOST 10 pounds in 3 days.

That even though I overeat in private, my excess poundage is there for all the world to see.
