I did in fact have previous kidney damage, but my doctor okayed Atkins because he knew I already drank a lot of water and he knew that weighing almost 300 pounds was bad for every condition from which I suffer. I have blood work done every 90 days and since starting Atkins and losing 120 pounds, my kidney function has never been better. My liver was damaged by too many antibiotics in 2006, but it has healed itself completely as I continue on with this WOL. Every aspect of my health is tremendously better.

Before you start, go to your doctor and have a check up with blood work and go from there.

    Here's what I looked like in 2005:

Here's what I look like in 2007: Do I look like a sick person???

Thanks! It's all thanks to Dr. Atkins, my HERO!

      Sunny!
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

            Re: Myth or not?

I was hospitalized once for a serious kidney infection and when I left the hospital I started Atkins and had no issues. This time around I have had no problems either.

Gary Taubes is the author of a book titled "Good Calories, Bad Calories" and he very carefully discusses and dissects the scientific research regarding low fat/low carbohydrate diets. It is an excellent read, if a bit technical. He pretty much shows how all the low fat hype is a bunk of bull.

Hmm, I'm thinking that a lot of the pictures that I'm seeing -- INCLUDING YOURS!! -- also prove the low fat way to be so very wrong.

I've been MIA for a little bit, but you're doing so great. Goal!!! Cool!

YES you eat a lot of meat the first week...because you are using FAT to get rid of the Sugar Cravings.. But we eat VEGGIES...lots of them..and if a VEGGIE is bad for you...I don't know what to say...lol

Once you get past the detox of the bad carbs.. White Sugar, White Flour...you will start to eat less meat... Then as you move into Owl phase..you will start to add things back in.. YES you will have Fruit again.. YES you will have Whole Grains..Milk products...etc...
Is it done in step so your body can see how to react t the new things beng added back in? Stalls, headaches, diarrhea, allergies, etc.?

Yah I think what people are missing and don't realize is that high fat/high protein/high carb diet is bad which is why they have theproblems they have. High fat/med. protein/low carb is fantastic

Mirya...have you read the 2002 Atkins book? It's essential to success and explains OWL in detail.

                      Taubes Book

                      I would like to add:

The book makes the case that sugar is what is killing us. Cancer, heart trouble, diabetes, etc. Many of our diseases may in fact be caused by sugar.
Excellent discussion about diabetes. Explains how and why people get fat. Debunks salt as the cause of high bp. And shows the weakness of the fiber is good for you theory. And much more. I was just amazed. After reading the book I'm just itchin for some "Atkins will kill you" folks to but heads with.
