  • Ketosis?

    Hello All,

I've been doing atkins for a week and a day now and I have been very strict with what I have eaten so I know that I'm not getting any hidden carbohydrates but I am not in ketosis. The little stick still says negative! I don't understand it at all. It is very discouraging. Is there any reason why I might not be in ketosis yet or that it might not show up? Are there other factors which might influence it like menstruation? Thanks for the help! I love this site, everyone is always so encouraging!

    Re: Ketosis?

First of all welcome to ADBB!

    A few questions:

    - How much water are you drinking?
    - When are you testing?
    - Can you post a detailed menu from a typical day - including amounts eaten etc?

That would enable people to give a more detailed response. But that said, there is probably nothing too much to worry about. Do you have other signs of Ketosis - such a bad breath, feeling less bloated, more energy, some weight or inches lost? There are quite a few people who have lost a load of weight and never had a positive sticks test - they are just a guide, not the be all and end all.

I lost 50 pounds in about three months and barely ever turned those evil stix at all. The only time I turned them more than a trace was when I was sick and dehydrated. I kept using them until I had lost 75 pounds and then tossed them in the trash, because they were making me feel like I was failing, when the weight was falling off. Some people just don't turn the stix very much at all. The up side is that a lot of people that are turning them purple are not losing weight. There are many other ways to tell if you are in ketosis, besides peeing on a stick. The only thing you might check into is to see if you are eating enough fat.

        Re: Ketosis?

I probably haven't been drinking enough water. The first couple of days I drank quite a lot but then I felt like I was sloshing so I definitely cut way back on that and haven't really made enough of an effort to drink enough.

A typical day has a bit of cheese or meat (like a piece of sausage) in the morning, a big salad for lunch (usually with cheese or pepperoni or chicken on it), and something like turkey breast and green beans for dinner. Sorry I haven't put quantities, I'm not great about being able to measure that kind of thing! When I snack it is usually on something kind of slim-jim like called pepperami, carbs seem to be low enough in them though!

I do feel better about the stick not turning though if it doesn't turn for everyone. I feel like I am doing ok on this diet and in fact today turned down chocolate from a co-worker in front of lots of other co-workers when one said "Here! We saved the last piece for you!" Also today we had a catered lunch with a really yummy looking cake for desert but I didn't have any so really, even if my stick doesn't turn purple I know that I am doing well!

        Thanks for the advice!

Great job on turning those items down, you'll thank yourself for that later!

Make sure to get water in, what is needed is different for everyone. Also, if you are not used to drinking it everyday, do what you can and gradually add to it, you'll soon notice a difference and want to keep that water intake up!

          Are you exercising?
As far as your menu goes, maybe you are sensitive to sodium? Slim-jims, pepperoni will have alot of salt and fillers, what cheese intake, it can stall some so if you don't know if you are eating 1 or 10 ounces that may be a problem? You could eat more in the morning for breakfast also if you want, how about an omelette?

Don't worry about the stix, just keep at it! You are doing great!
