  • How Do You Cook Your Food?

    Hey Guys

Although atkins is really good for losing weight the one thing that always worried me was the high fat intake, i know it doesnt affect your weight or cholestoral as long as your still on the diet but i've never been anle to kick the idea that too much fat and grease is just bad for you.

So because of this 9 times out of 10 i'll use the george forman to cook my food instead of frying it. Was just wondering what other peoples habbits are for cooking on atkins. Do you fry most of the time, or branch out and grill, boil or just plain through your food on a fire?

We grill a lot. I have a foreman and use that too. I stir fry in olive oil and butter.

The FAT is your friend, though.

I will eat (as a treat and on occasion) fried, fresh, pork fat. OMG it's DIVINE. Pork scratchings, cracklins, chicharrones...whatever you call them.

Dr. Atkins said to not try to do a low fat version of the diet. And, you don't need to. I've lost over 90 lbs, lowered my cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and I eat the fat on my meat, skin on my chicken! Fat is my friend.

You can, if it really is important to you, make sure most of your fat is monounsaturated....but you still need the high fat content!! So, take your grilled chicken breast....or fried in olive oil....and top it with some guacamole

Re: How Do You Cook Your Food?

I grill a lot outside, no matter the weather. My neighbors think I'm nuts. I don't like greasy tasting fried food. I choose to get my fat other ways. Grilling opens up a whole new world with veggies.

I cook just for me, so I bake a lot of my meat in a toaster oven. Easy cleanup and stays tender and moist.

I stir-fry a lot of my veggies in extra virgin olive oil and butter. I also roast them with olive oil. You'd be surprised how different the same foods tastes cooked all these different ways.

I get so many ideas from the wonderful people on this board. Things I would never have thought of trying, I find I love.

As for the fat, you couldn't be more repelled by fat than me two years ago. Not because I was afraid of it being bad for me, I just couldn't stand the shiny, greasy feel. I used to fry eggs in Butter Flavor Pam and then take a paper towel and wipe all the shiny off. Now I fry them in butter or bacon grease and don't wipe any of it off. I put lots of EVOO on veggies and salads and love it. I used to put so little mayo on anything, it was hardly worth the effort. Now, I can slather it on low fat meat, like turkey breast. And, my blood work is done every 90 days and my numbers have never been better!

Fat is your friend! Enjoy it!

I fry a lot, but I prefer to call it saute! To Fry sounds fatty, but to saute sounds French! LOL! We grill outside year round. I also use my pressure cooker and clay pot. I will bake in the oven, but I usually prefer faster methods, unless it's something like lasagne. I buy olive oil by the liter and I love butter, but I do trim the fat off my steak.

Re: How Do You Cook Your Food?

I'm a griller. I grill my chicken, my burgers, my pork tenderloin, my flank steak, basically ALL meats, on the grill outside. (Actually I make my boyfriend do it.) I HATE animal fat--it grosses me out. I refuse to eat skin on chicken or fatty cuts of meat, this means I have to add fat in other ways. Luckily, fat is calorie-dense, meaning a little goes a long way. I put butter on veggies, melt cheese on my chicken, eat mayo on my burger. You don't have to fry your foods in grease to do Atkins. You're allowed to eat animal fats liberally, but you don't HAVE to if you don't like animal fats! Just make sure that at each meal you're eating enough fat, either from the food itself or added as a "condiment" (like mayo or butter or olive oil).

Re: How Do You Cook Your Food?

I recently bought a G Foreman 'baby george' small rotisseré and i love it! It makes an amazing roast or chicken.

I also like to grill, but it's tough here in the winter.

I've been trying to use my crockpot alot as well. I made a brisket for the first time recently and really liked it (you really have to cook it for a long time though!)

Re: How Do You Cook Your Food?

I don't do too much outdoor grilling due to the cancer risks but occasionally it's great. Mom gave me her small George Forman grill and I absolutely loathed cooking on it. The surface only held one thin piece of chicken. If the meat or fish is more than about one inch thick the outside gets burned before the center is cooked. Gave up on that! I use a grill pan or broiler for my meats. Non-stick skillet for just about anything. I use Olive Oil and butter, too. No sprays. You can also baste with mayo!

Re: How Do You Cook Your Food?

Most of my meat is either grilled, baked or roasted. I seldom fry, out of habit of course! I also have a foreman grill, but haven't used it much. Maybe I should take it out of the box! It's been in there for the last 3 years. THen I would probably use it. Out of sight, out of mind!

I use my George Foreman a lot, really love it.

The first time I did Atkins I had a really hard time because I wasn't eating enough fat, so I'm careful now, I add butter and olive oil to everything.
