  • Is this a Realistic Goal?

    Hi everyone!

    My question to the veterans is . . .

    With standard "dieting" it is said that one can reasonably lose 2 lbs a week.

    Is it possible with Atkins and combining a exercise regime of 5 to 6 days of either cardio and strength training to consistently lose 10 lbs a month??

    Conceivably a person could lose 80 lbs in 8 months??

    Has anyone done this?

    Depends. On you, how much you have to lose, how your body reacts. Nobody here can say for sure. I lost 10 pouns in one week on Atkins some times, and then less than 10 a month others. It took about 11 months for me to lose just over 100lbs. But there's no way to tell really. Until you try it yourself.

      Yes that is certainly conceivable. Impossible to guess for sure if it's possible for you persoanly but it certainly has been done. Too many variables go into the mix starting with how much weight you have to lose, your sex, and your age.

      Having said it's possible though I want to add that I worry when anyone sets their goals based on amount of weight loss within a certain time frame. The problem with setting up a goal like that is you may be setting yourself up for disapointment. It's nearly impossible, no matter how hard you try, to ensure that you will be hitting specific weight loss goals within a certain time frame.

      I've seen too many people crushed by dispointment when they don't reach those types of goals when in fact that were steadily losing weight and getting fitter and succesfully staying on plan. Rather then being happy with how they were doing they felt they weren't being succesful because they didn't hit their semi-arbitrarily assigned weight loss within the time frame they had planned for. That disapointment can lead to turning to food for comfort bringing back bad old patterns.

      There really is no telling how fast you will lose. Having an overall weight loss goal is fine and even helpful but instead of worrying how fast you will lose how about concentrating instead of those things you can control such as setting a number of days to exercise per week, number of steps/stairs/miles in a month, number of days without eating off plan etc... These goals you can directly control and I beleive will serve you better in the long run.

        Thank you very much for your time and answer. I sincerely appreciate it!

        I am 39 turning 40 this year female and I have a set exercise schedule of 5 to 6 days alternating cardio and strength training and I don't have a problem with staying on task for eating. Cheating or going off diet - just doesn't interest me. So the dedication part is there.

        I completely understand about setting oneself up for disappointment. I will actively watch that and keep that message fore front.

        I will plan as you have stated about setting exercise goals and hopefully these will better serve me for the long haul.

          Everyone is different, but yes that is very possible. I am on Day 9 of Induction and I have lost about 24 pounds.
          Start weight: 388
          Current weight: 351.5
          Goal Weight: 220

            it seems to be totally possible. yes. BUT everyone burns, loses, sheds differently. I personally havenot been comfortable enough to exercise much so if i did I would lose at a different rate and in a different way. Everyone is like this based on their body, how uch they have to lose initially and how much exercise goes into it as well.

              I agree with everyone else. Yes, it is possible, but each one of us is different. Some may only lose 5 pounds a month, and others up to 20 pounds a month. When I was on Atkins before, I lost an average of over 20 pounds a month, so it is possible. Just dont be discouraged on the amount you lose. You may be slower or faster, and even hit times where you lose nothing for a week or two. Just hang in there!!

                Grant is right.

                If you are an 18 year old male 150lbs over weight, it is very possible. A 65 year old female with about 85 to lose VERY unlikely. Young males with lots to lose can lose with amazing ease. Older females with few pounds left to lose have it very difficult. Like over a month for a single pound.

                  rather than setting one big goal 8 months out. How about setting mini goals with no time stamp on em. Celebrate every 10 pounds or better yet, everytime you go down a dress size no matter how long it takes you to get there. I had a goal set in september to lose 32 lbs by new years. I lost 29 by new years. January second i went off plan and binged and beat myself up and binged and beat myself up some more. OVER 3 LBS!!! I failed to see my success and only instead saw my failure. I am back on plan now and while i am not losing i am instead setting goals to finally get to goal no matter how long it takes.
