  • Day 2. Day 1 was bad

    This is my third attempt at Atkins. The two other experiences went pretty good. This one seems to be different.

    I started yesterday for breakfast. I had 5 Bob Evans sausages and 16 oz water. At lunch, I had 8 pieces of roast beef with some mayonaise, and about 24 oz of water.

    Sometime after lunch, I started to get a headache. By the end of the work day it was pounding. My ride home was horrible, couldn't focus. Had trouble staying awake.

    I kept drinking water throughout the day, probably had about 10-12 cups of water throught the day.

    I got home and went straight to bed. I slept for an hour and woke up, still with the headache, and now my sinuses were getting clogged. I couldn't take the headache pain anymore, so I took some tylenol.

    I pretty much sat there and did nothing the rest of the evening and went bed at 10:30 and passed out till 6:30 this morning.

    My head still hurts today, but not nearly as bad. And I have a lot more strength; not as lethargic.

    My question is, is this the Atkins flu people talk about? I never had anything like this the last 2 times I did the diet.

    The other thing I read it might be is aspartame withdrawal. The last 2 times I did the diet, I was drinking regular soda all the time. This time around, I was drinking a lot of Coke Zero and Diet Pepsi.

    So I figure I have three different things which may cause the issue:

    1. Sugar Withdrawal
    2. Caffeine Withdrawal
    3. Aspartame Withdrawal

    Either way, I'm still at it. Has anyone else experienced what I described?

    Andy - I'm no expert, but I know that whenever I have re-inducted, I get the headache and do get tired. The only thing that had worked for me is what you did, just go to bed! It seems to subside within 2-3 days for me....

    I'm sure others will be able to come in and explain your situation, in the meantime, I hope today is finding you feeling so much better!!

      It could be combo even. good for you for cutting out the soda! I didn't get the induction flu this time around but I did my first time and it lasted about 4 days. Just keep going. Eventually your body adapts and you will feel better then you ever have!

        While it could well be the withdrawal, it might also be that you seem to be eating no carb instead of low carb - where are the veggies?
